A Novel About 18th Century California
Some time in the past, I can't remember when, DavidK did me the huge favor at looking at a novel I was writing about the Californias at the time Spain
ruled it and the Jesuits ran it. He rightly pointed out lots and lots of errors about the Baja missions based upon his extensive research on the
subject. As you all know, he has a HUGE collection of maps and just about anything else imaginable on the subject.
Anyhow, he shamed me and I went back to the drawing board, using his expertise and a number of books he brought to my attention. I am far from
finished it but have completed 92,000 words.
If you think that's a lot, I don't think I've even reached the half-way point! I envision this sage to exceed 200,000 words and it only covers a
period from 1721 to 1781 - doesn't seem all that long, does it?
Anyhow, I am seeking a volunteer to take a look at what I've completed and give their reaction. Remember, Leatherjacket Soldier, The Life of Fernando
de Rivera y Moncada is HISTORICAL and I've bent some things to make it entertaining.

You'd be astonished in the difference between the one you read and the current project.
The hardest part is getting all the characters straight. It's amazing how many of the soldiers that served with and under him in Baja played a big
part in the Portola expedition and the founding of the missions.

Oh great... I will need to buy the book when it is ready! Yes, the Baja missions (or really the FIRST California missions) played a huge part in the
Alta California missions and population. Many Baja Indians came north with the Spanish soldiers and Franciscan padres.
