north via san ysidro or otay mesa

yesterday some friends ended up in a major hassle from getting in the sentri lane at san ysidro, and i have almost been stuck in it twice because the signs are very confusing for some of us who can get ourselves to the Aztec (my apologies is he is another tribe!) and then literally are lost in the maze. my question is, since we are going to long beach tomorrow monring, is it easier on the nerves to go past the airport to the crossing at otay, which is much better marked? or is there a trick at san ysidro i dont know about? thanks...
