Sonora officials warn of dengue epidemic
Although chikungunya has been getting all the press in recent months, another mosquito-borne virus continues to pose a threat.
Today the state government of Sonora issued an alert warning of the danger of a dengue epidemic that could strike as many as 5,000 people.
Health authorities are contracting with doctors and fumigators and purchasing supplies in preparation, the governor and secretary of health said at a
press conference today.
The public is also being called upon to donate blood in readiness for any outbreak of the virus.
Health Secretary Gilberto Ungson Beltrán reported that mosquito traps are showing a 30% increase in numbers which, he warned, signifies a “very large
quantity of mosquitoes, and a greater possibility of deaths caused by dengue.”
Symptoms of dengue can range from mild to severe and include a sudden onset of fever, headache, muscle and joint pains and a rash.
Despite a shortage of fumigant, which was blamed on the previous state administration, authorities are now ready, said Governor Claudia Pavlovich
Arellano, who was sworn in just last week.
The state has two weeks’ worth of fumigant on hand, thanks to support from neighboring states of Baja California and Sinaloa, she said.
Ungson Beltrán said once the current rainy period has ended there will be a massive fumigation campaign in urban and rural areas, the distribution of
information about dengue’s symptoms and training for doctors and homemakers.
The municipalities at greater risk of a dengue epidemic are Hermosillo, Guaymas, Empalme, Cajeme and Etchojoa, the health secretary said.
Chikungunya, meanwhile, has been spreading since it was first spotted in Mexico last year. Two weeks ago there were over 5,200 confirmed cases.

POINT OF NOTICE:
Anyone headed south this week, next, or in the next couple of weeks it would be a good suggestion to pack (not only for yourself) several cans if not
a couple of cases of orange-top OFF! to give out to locals in whatever areas you travel to. The excess water will breed bugs; do a good thang, give
some relief and protection. A little love goes a long way.
