Algodones or Mexicali Crossing?
We will be getting dental work done in Algodones before we head south this year. When we finally cross, we will need to pick up our visitor permits.
Will it be best to drive over and cross at Mexicali, or will we be able to cross at Algodones and then connect up with Hwy 5 south of Mexicali?

To answer your question, I think it is easier to get your permit in Algodones and then proceed to 2..then to 5 south of Mexicali.

I used the Algodones crossing headed north a couple of years ago, and it appeared to me that to get an FMM, the parking was on the US side of the
border. Is that correct?

there is a very large parking area out side the boarder
but if the OP is having dental work done, he can get his FMM
at the office its just right across the boarder, easy

Algodones: Drive thru the border and the migration guy will have you double park just past the gate. Go into the office and pay.
If he does not stop you drive on turn right and park and walk back to the office. Maybe he will be there?

Algodones is easy peasy to get to 5 large signs taking you to 2 (toll road) south of Mexicali... have some small peso coins for the toll...
San Luis south of Yuma is about the same... only one block to turn right and head toward 5 on 2.....
take care

If you go south on 10 and enter 2 outside of San Luis, there is no toll to be paid. We always used to go that way when we came from Colorado and it
was our favorite crossing. Much less hassle than San Luis, Mexicali, or Tecate. If you go south on the main street, turn left at the first stop
sign, then right at the next stop sign you will be on the right road.

Agree with Pescador & mtnpop for the Algodnones route. And the road along the canal has improved since last year.
Southbound stop at the casino restrooms. North bound a new PMEX very near the north turn has clean restrooms. Most times northbound wait is quite
good. Things are better these days.

Not sure where you are coming down from. But, if you are coming out of Fenix, we normally use San Luis. It is faster and you catch Hwy 2 as soon as
you cross. The INM office is to your right when you cross. The best bet is to take a left to the declaracion lane and park. Then you can walk to
get your Visa.
