? whither winter weather when in Baja Sur ?

I would like to ask again about finding weather forecasts either on line or by phone when in Baja Sur during January?

Our first trip was December 2007 and we saw no extremes but hope for forecast as we will be off road more this trip.

Is there a marine channel that would give local temps?

Biggest problem will be knowing where the forecast is focused.

Many thanks

I just use the AccuWeather app. You can plug your location in and its fairly accurate. This winter in La Paz has been cooler and windier than normal, but for me its still nice...I just throw on a sweater.

Channel 22 on VHF marine radio is where local weather is broadcast on 8 AM M-Sat in La Paz. It is an amateur doing the Wx from several sources. If you have an HF radio, there are other nets that broadcast the Wx daily on those frequencies. For more info for the La Paz and Baja Sur area google Club Cruceros La Paz and click on the weather link. Most of the above are for cruising boats in the Sea of Cortez. Baja Insider has Wx for most of Baja at http://www.bajainsider.com/categories/weather.

All of the amateur reports are in English as far as I know.

There is one on the 75 meter ham band every morning if you have any way to listen to that. Very comprehensive.

Also, there is the on line NOAA wind forecast. I find it a trifle pessimistic but I'm not out away from shore.

Receiving HF/mobile maritime/"ham" radio weather broadcasts doesnt have to be that expensive, really. Look for some type of "world band" radio receiver on e-bay, Amazon and other internet sources. There are decent ones still being manufacturered by Sony, Grundig, Sangean, Tecsun, Crane and others. Just make sure it has SSB tuning. I think the Tecsun 660 is probably the best value and maybe the best one out there. A little over 100.00 new. Or buy it from China direct and it will run about 85.00. Will also pull in aircraft radio broadcasts and commercial AM and FM broadcasts.

The major mobile maritime broadcasts that currently include predictions for the Pacific ocean off Baja and the Sea of Cortez off Baja (no predictions for Baja interior locations) are:

Sonrisa net: 3.968 megahertz LSB (sometimes moving to 3.965 if propagation is bad or other traffic exists) approx. 1345 UTC/GMT/Zulu time in summer and winter. The most complete weather report on radio for the Baja peninsula. You get temps and wind predictions for MANY locations, but they are all coastal locations. Sky conditions also covered in general terms; no quantitative precipitation predictions, if that's what you are looking for.

Chubasco net: 7.192 megahertz LSB. LONG organizational transmissions (sometimes 30 minutes) begin at 1430 UTC/GMT/Zulu time in summer and 1530 UTC/GMT/Zulu time in winter. Weather follows all the organizations stuff like setting up the relay network and calls for emergency traffic.

Manana net: 14342.5 megahertz USB. Much shorter organizational stuff before they get to the weather. Net begins at 1900 UTC/GMT/Zulu time in summer and winter. Weather usually within 15 minutes.

Don't the local TV stations do weather as part of the newscast? La Paz has local TV I don't know about the other cities like Loreto and Cabo.

There is an amazing collection of photos from Winter Storm Goliath on the Weather Channel; all taken from social media sources.

Bajabuddha, I think you are a bit west of the brunt of what hit NM, but look at some of the photos around Clovis. Stunning!

I cannot recall foul weather in BCS in January. And I'm speaking about being there since 1982. You might wish to check into road conditions in BCS about roads that were affected by the summer and fall storms.
