It says: ojos de liebre ,, which is translated as `rabbit eyes´.
Many brochures using this term.
But, many locals telling me that`s wrong. It needs to say: Ojos de libre ,, which is translated as `free eyes´.
Following the so called "eye hopping" (see pic #2) of the wales which is supposed to be used by the wales to have a `free look around '. Free eyes makes more sense than `rabbit eyes´.
I know that `ojos de liebre´is used more often. But does it makes sense?

OJO DE LIEBRE...

HARE EYE... no mo'... no less...

...work to camp and fish.... dream to be there....

As far as I know, Laguna Ojo de Liebre...eye of the jackrabbit is named, as many places are...after a fresh water spring on the other side of the lagoon. These fresh water springs are called OJOs in spanish...and as there are so many jackrabbits in this area, this spring was named after them.

One story I have heard was that it was named this because jackrabbits eyes are red and the lagoon was named that when the lagoon ran red with the blood of slaughtered gray whales...but I believe it was named that by indigenous people before whaling.

here is a link to an interesting video on how the Ejiditarios came to the lagoon area and what they have accomplished there with the help of the government. There is some nice footage of the Interpretive Center and campground too...not to mention the stars of the whale parts are Romeo & Saddle who stayed together the whole season last year.

30-35 years back I was told by a man in San Ignacio that it translated as "Jackrabbit Spring."
