subscribing
I don't see how to subscribe to a forum. I read an old post that said it wasn't possible, so perhaps it's still not possible. However, shouldn't I be
able to subscribe to individual topics? I posted in one and that didn't automatically subscribe me. Please help. Thanks

Believe
you have to tell it overtly that you want to subscribe to specific topics.

Correct, this is subscribing to a THREAD, not a FORUM.
When posting a new topic, or replying to a current topic, one also optionally check the box to "receive e-mail on reply?". Likewise, one could
edit/add a post to uncheck that option.
In the user control panel, one can delete thread subscriptions - here:
http://forums.bajanomad.com/memcp.php?action=subscriptions
