I have gone that way the last few trips.. Faster easier.. I would recommend it. Pain in the burro getting through Mexicali until you do it once

This thread has the latest reports, I believe. Including my observations from 2 months ago (ie. 22 unpaved miles remain... easy for most vehicles...
semi tractor/trucks use it as a major shortcut between Mexicali and Baja Sur.

Still a bit bouncy for motorhome and travel trailers if you have unsecured dishes in cabinets!
