SPANISH MISSION FOUNDING DATES
While most of the 25 Spanish missions founded in Baja California have now pretty good details of who operated them and where they were founded, in a
few cases the exact date of founding remains a mystery or was never published. In some cases we know the month and year, but not the day.
Before the successful 25 missions, some years earlier two attempted missions were started:
Mission Guadalupe (at La Paz Bay): Apr. 1, 1683 to Jul. 14, 1683.
Mission San Bruno (north of Loreto): Oct. 6, 1683 to May 8, 1685.
One of my hopes is that the missing information will turn up as missing books are discovered.
LORETO: Oct. 25, 1687
SAN JAVIER: Nov. 1, 1699
LIGUI: Nov. __, 1705
MULEGE: Nov. __, 1705
COMONDU: __,__, 1708
LA PURISIMA: Jan. 1, 1720
PILAR DE LA PAZ: Nov. 3, 1720
GUADALUPE: Dec. 12, 1720
LOS DOLORES: Aug. 2, 1721
SANTIAGO: __,__, 1724
SAN IGNACIO: Jan. 20, 1728
SAN JOSE DEL CABO: Apr. 8, 1730
SANTA ROSA: Aug. __, 1733
SAN LUIS GONZAGA: July 14, 1737
SANTA GERTRUDIS: July 15, 1752
SAN BORJA: Sept. 1, 1762
CALAMAJUE/SANTA MARIA: Oct. 16, 1766/ May __, 1767
SAN FERNANDO: May 14, 1769
EL ROSARIO: July 24, 1774
SANTO DOMINGO: Aug. 30, 1775
SAN VICENTE: Aug. 27, 1780
SAN MIGUEL: Mar. 28, 1787
SANTO TOMAS: Apr. 24, 1791
SAN PEDRO MARTIR: Apr. 27, 1794
SANTA CATALINA: Nov. 12, 1797
In addition to the 25 Spanish missions, 2 more were established during the Mexican period:
EL DESCANSO: site founded about 1810, new mission church constructed in 1830... no month or day recorded.
GUADALUPE: June 25, 1834

David, ran across this article and thought you might be interested, although it's about a California mission: https://daphnewynnenixonpaintings.com/old-adobe-mission-sant...

Other assistencias of the California missions exist. Here in San Luis Obispo County is an "assistant" mission of the San Louis Obispo mission. Ed
Vernon has published a small book with photographs of this particular "assistencia". It is located on Cuesta grade as one drives north from SLO.

Isn't this historic mystery stuff interesting to ponder about or discover!
Thank you, Kgryfon for sharing the link! Seems to be a satellite station of Solano or San Francisco, created after the Spanish lost to the Mexicans?
Here is more about the Asistencia (like a 'Visita' in Baja): http://usmissiontrail.com/california/santa_eulalia/santa_eul...

I read Ed's paper on it... Ed has done some great research on it and both the Baja missions and the shipwrecks around Baja in his two big, beautiful
books!

Yes indeed... It doesn't always need to be about Baja to still be interesting here.
Our 2012 book, The Old Missions of Baja & Alta California, 1697-1834, is about the founding of the "California Missions" which were the missions
in Baja just as much as those from San Diego north.
"California" was the peninsula for over 200 years before "Baja" was added to the name... and there were 18 "California" missions established before
San Diego which is about when there needed to be a distinction in the regions with the altered name for the peninsula vs. the land north of the
peninsula, called Nueva (New) California or Alta (Upper) California.
We have the Second Edition/ 2015 printing of that book still available for those interested in the real founding history of the 27 peninsula missions
with the 21 missions in Alta California. After San Diego, 9 more missions were founded in Baja California while (and after) missions were founded in
Alta California. Go to www.oldmissions.com to see or buy these and other Baja books.
