Ensenada shopping?

We are going to stay in Ensenada a few days in mid August and would like to find some unique pieces to decorate with - not furniture, but things like lamps, mirrors, wall hangings - stuff like that. We want to get away from the tourist shopping areas but do not know where to begin in town. We are quite willing to go the the non-touristy parts of the city.

Suggestions (street name or intersections near by?)

There is some really cool places on the main street down town. Just
don't go when the boat people are there! week day prices are way
better. there is a very cool shop but we can not think of the name.
but he has some very unique metal work, north of the tiger bar,
same side of the street. call the # on the door if no one is there,
they will come right away. have a great time!

There is a shop on the way to the Estero Beach resort. It is at the corner of Lazaro Card##as and California y o Tercera. The owner's name is Raul. http://tinyurl.com/z5uk3rc he has some interesting stuff and also does custom metal art

You might find more items at the shops south of the Rosarito Beach Hotel on the free road to the stoplight at Popotla (Blvd 2000)

Two shops on the "Tourist Street", Calle Primera, between Gastelum and Ruiz, next to the Mario's silver shop

First shop is wall hangings and metal art, owner's name is Memo. The shop is above the La Concheria restaurant (great seafood and shellfish). Memo should be at La Concheria. Second shop is right next door, owned by Memo's sister

If you are going to be in Ensenada on a Tuesday or a Thursday and want a late lunch/early dinner, try El Serape. Corner of Blancarte and the Costero.

It's a upper end "dive bar' but the guy on the patio turns out some great grilled rib-eye steaks, salmon and tuna steaks. About 170 pesos. If you can, sit out in the patio and mingle with the "old Ensenada" guys. Fun and interesting.........get there early, they start serving at 1pm and are usually out of stuff by 4pm

YES! The shop owned by Memo's sister is a great place to shop. Even has an upstairs loaded with even more goodies. We recently bought a ceramic katrina doll there and a reasonable price.

Just do it!

Memo is a character and a great conversationalist. He has a core group of local artists he works with and always coming up with something new. His sisters shop was started by their father and mother decades ago - Bazaar Casa Ramirez - nice family with unique stuff and good prices. Dad used to travel to the mainland and hire a truck to take him around to all the little villages and he would fill the truck up with crafts/furniture/artwork. He developed a network of artisans that they still work with. We actually 'commissioned' a folding room screen and a custom 'Bienvenidos a Casa ElGatoLoco' sign for our house.
Tell them Barb & Matt from San Diego said hi. They will probably charge you double. :saint::lol:

I don't know Ensenada proper, but I do know that the La Bufadora area is WAY overpriced. It was the most unpleasant shopping experience I have ever had in all of Baja - hawkers galore, very aggressive, and again, items are super overpriced and they don't negotiate. Good luck!

I second the recommendation re Popotla near Rosarito. Lots of stuff there.

In Ensenada, there are also a couple of stores on the east side of Primera just south of the OXXO in the tourist area selling.

My wife really likes Raul's stuff and he has a lot of different things. She had him do some custom metalwork and it came out great at a good price.
