SAN IGNACIO current whale report?
Heading to SI lagoon next week. Wondering if anyone has a current report on
number of whales in the lagoon. Has it been a good season? Have the whales
started leaving yet? Any info is appreciated.

I read on one of the Mexican news sites that the whale population in general is down 40% this year due to unusually cold water in the Pacific &
that whales have headed farther south to warmer water.

Yes the numbers are down a bit this year but that is normal as it is cyclical...some years the numbers are up like the last few years and some years
they are down. I dont buy the cold water theory as whales feed in very cold waters. They come to Mexico to give birth to the calves in the lagoons in
the warmer waters...and they are doing just that so they haven't headed further south.
We are having a fantastic season at Laguna Ojo de Liebre....lots of friendly whales every day and I figure there are probably over 1,500 with lots of
babies. They did arrive a bit later this year so may leave a bit later from the lagoons.

Whale watching San Ignacio lagoon was terrific! Whale encounters both times out!
Unfortunately, strong winds limited our number of trips out this year, still worth the trip and expense! 🐋🐋
Will definitely return! Indescribable experience! Baja road trip plus whales can't be beat! Life is so good when simple pleasures can enrich you life!

Are you able to whale watch from the shore in SI Lagoon or do you need a boat/charter? We'll be going that way mid-March from SI to Loreto via El
Datil. And would we get a boat/charter in SI? Thanks

You need a guided service with a boat. The whale watching area is controlled, and only permitted boats can go. While you may be able to see some
from the shore, you definitely need a boat for the real experience.
I went last week. It was absolutely amazing.
I went with Kuyima, but there are other guides in SI, including Fischer:

BBR is right y2k. Of course you can watch from a distance in some comfort but you give up the close encounters of whale mothers nuzzling your panga,
introducing their babies to you and looking up at you from beneath a few inches of water with those big eyes...
That experience is not to be equaled anywhere on the surface of this planet (And as a rock licking Geologist, that's an incredible confession).

Thanks for the replies. We went with Shari (a BajaNomad) in Gn. We have more time that day. The day we pass SI lagoon we will make a stop to see
the whales from a distance as we look forward to the day we're on the water with them.
