I have a friend coming down in a month hauling his boat, he doesn't know anything about a TIP nor do I. is this something he can get online or thru a
travel club or does he stop where you buy the FMM? thanks!

Last I heard a TIP is not needed for boats up to 15 feet in length.

Pretty close! The last time this came up I remember that the TIP was required for above 4.5 meters (about 14' 7")
If you are not living on the edge, you are taking up too much space!
"Could do better if he tried!" Report card comments from most of my grade school teachers. Sadly, still true!

Kayaks are excluded from needing a TIP, correct?
If not, my sit on top, at 14', + a rudder will come close

This will lead you to the Mexican website to obtain the TIP. should start the process about 2 weeks prior to entering Mexico. Pretty easy.

You don't need a TIP for a tender to larger boat that has TIP or otherwise is legal.

You don't mention how far south you are going. I picked up my TIP in La Paz, out at Pichilingue at the ferry building. All that was required was the
boat registration with the VIN and the Serial Number of the engine. Whole process about 5 minutes.

This posted on BD July 10 about ease of getting TIP at Tecate crossing:
"Im headed for BOLA Thursday at 0-dark-30 and didnt want to deal with Otay on the day of so I took my new to me Sea Fox 206
Commander down to Tecate today to make sure I got it done. They do want a copies to keep of your boat and trailer registration and the front and back
of your passport. Should bring the originals as well. It was kind of comical, one guy is waving me thru to park around the corner past the checkpoint,
other guy is saying wait here in front of the payment office. I liked the wait here option so I ran with it. I was done with the process in 45
minutes, staff was pleasant to work with, but they wouldnt let me take the shortcut back to the border so I had to drive east thru Tecate to hit the
border crossing. 45-50 minute wait to get across back to the USA so about a 2 hour process overall. Cost was $60 USD, good for 10 years. Tecate
payment office is open 8-4 daily. See other posts here on BD for rules on business owned boats and trust owned boats. If your smart and can plan ahead
it can all be done online but could take 10-14 days to get your permit in the mail they say"
