Boobies in Bahia Asuncion! (the bird ones sillies!)

The last few times I have been to Asuncion Island I have seen a pair of blue footed boobies. Last week I was stoked to spot 3 of them on the outer rocks!

Then as we were about to leave the area, I saw a bird I had never seen before in the middle of the cormorants. I couldnt find it in my bird books and a friend told me it may be a masked boobie but then another person sent me a link to a Nazca Boobie and that sure looks like an exact match to me! Pretty cool eh! Anyone else ever seen one?

Our guests, a Swiss couple wanted to snorkel with the sea lions but the pups who are now over 3 months old have started to play around in the water a bit at the shore so the moms & dads were very protective so we opted not to. Here is a pup with his mom on the rocks.

and here are some nursing on the beach. The pup started crying and nosing the mom and she rolled over so he could feed!

I found out that pinniped researchers brand pups when they are young to keep track of them...this one on the right has a huge #9368 on its side. I have reported the sighting to a few different agencies.

The pups sure are cute now and struggling getting in and out of the water in big waves....lots of rock crabs now too.

some amigos were fishing at the island so we got a fishing report from them...over yonder....

sure enough within 3 minutes Adrian hooked a nice bonita...his first fish ever! He couldnt believe he caught one soooo fast!

then his girlfriend hooked one but didnt reel it in fast enough and a sealion gorfed down her fish.

We also saw more spotted seals than I have ever seen there!

this couple said this trip was much like a mini Galapagos with all the bird and mammal life we saw...hundreds of common dolphins all around us, a huge sea turtle too & thousands of sea lions.

On the way home we passed in front of our La Bufadora Inn....it looks different from the water!

I hope the next time I have the privledge of staying at your magical Inn by the sea, that we take advantage of Juans offer to go island site seeing. Seeing your La Bufadora from the water is special.

Can't get enough of those boobies. Sorry to take a leap from the original intentions of actual birding.

Thanks to all here, and may all of our blessings be forwarded to those suffering with the recent spate of the Ring of Fire becoming so active in Mexico.

We saw a bunch of blue-footed boobies down in Lopez Mateo several years back on a whale tour. The mangroves were full of 'em. 34- C's. :o

Saw some boobies in Cabo Wabo but they were fake. Go figure. :saint:

Have never seen a nazca or a blue foot. Did see red footed boobies in La Paz but that was years ago.

Look for the blue footed on the rocks at the mouth of the river in Mulege. I've also seen them in BdeLA on the rocky points beyond the entrance to Don Juan Cove.

Happy Boobing!
