Gonzaga Bay Trip Report
Hello Nomads. I just returned from a 5 day fishing trip at Gonzaga Bay. We stayed at Alfonsina's, which has new management and is under
construction. This did not cause any problems except noise during the day. Same great food, as always.
Day 1 - Put the boat in around noon. It was breezy, so we fished around Willard Island. My expectations were not high, but we did pretty good,
catching a number of Sierra, triggers and cabrilla. There was very little gill netting compared to the past two years, and maybe this is helping the
local fish population.
Day 2 - Headed to Isla San Luis at dawn. Did great with large Sierra and again caught a number of triggers and cabrilla. Unfortunately, no
Yellowtail. Fished Willard in the afternoon and caught a few more of the same. Overall a very good day.
Day 3 - Headed back to Isla San Luis at dawn, and pretty much had a repeat performance of the previous day. Went to Isla Spire and got into some
really nice Sierra (approaching 36 inches). Fished Willard in the afternoon. Overall, another very good day. I have never caught so many large
Sierra before in my life. Lot's of fun. Kept some for dinner, and let the rest go for another day.
Day 4 - We were pulling out at noon, so fished Willard early in the morning. Caught some more Sierra and a large Spotted Bay Bass which we had for
dinner. It was great!
Note that it was hotter than usual for October, with more flying gnats than I have experienced and they were not running the generator at night. I
recommend bringing bug spray if you are visiting soon.

I had Room 2, and it was $100.00 a night with three people staying there.

...I saw the Big Mouth Bastard and thought "you caught that at Gonzaga Bay" and then realized it was BOLA. "Cabrilla" is such a crazy term in Baja
fishing. Do you mean leopard grouper and such?
Thanks for the report. Sierra are so fun to catch and such good eating. Glad you had a good time!
