Fantastic Whale Watching at Laguna Ojo de Liebre this week!

We had a very memorable whale adventure this week with dozens of mother's and calves all around us, mating, spy hopping, calves on the mom's backs and perfect weather...here are some highlights.

Some of my guests arrived by plane with Aero Servicios Guerrero Negro that flies from Ensenada, with a cool stopover at Cedros Island

We had a great dinner together at restaurant Ojo de Liebre which is across from where they spray your car for pests at the parallel...amazing grilled lobster & corvina, scallop c-cktail, homemade soup etc etc...and margaritas

Cool to see white pelicans on the drive out to the lagoon...the road was fantastic....better than the highway!

Here is our motley crew..

The lagoon was full of indigo jelly fish.

this playful calf kept smiling at us! It is older than most of the other calves.

this calf spent alot of time resting on it's mother's back...it had a lot of barnacles and was also older than most.

We had 3 different solitary whales come over to our panga to greet us!

But the most exciting part was when I saw a big fat female who I thought was in labour. I told my guests that if she started barrel rolling we might see a birth! And lo & behold...she rolled and I managed to snap this photo where you can see a little piece of the calf's tail sticking out her vagina!!!!

The second picture is out of focus but you can better see the tail on the right side of her body which is belly up.

We were anxiously watching for the calf to pop up to the surface when she headed towards us and lifted her head up to be touched then quickly swam away and was throwing her tail like she was in distress....I could not believe it! What the heck? where was the calf? what was she doing visiting while giving birth?

My take on it was that she was having a hard birth and perhaps came over to us for some support & love. I hope she went off and had her calf. She is easily identifiable by a large scar patch on her back and by her tail which has both fluke tips bit off by Killer Whales. I look forward to spending quality time with her and her baby this season! In my 29 years of trips on the lagoon this was only the 3rd birth I witnessed!!!

We celebrated our good fortune at lunch at the Ejido restaurant....nice shrimp tacos and corvina for me.

Dear Shari, thanks for the memories.

Anyone who experiences your magical tour will always want to be back with you on the lagoon.

In the meantime, seeing the latest photos will have to suffice and are much appreciated every time. Have a great season.

Flying down is my only option. Maybe I can ride up front in the Carravan and fly a bit...
I'm guessing about 5 hours from Ensenada? But I willl calculate it out to be sure.
I guess I will need to rent a car and leave it in Ensenada.
I suppose I would stay in Guerrero Negro.
Fly in, hug a whale, fly home...
That ought to fix me for a few minutes...

Shari, can you please tell me how much a ticket is round trip with Aero Servicios Guerrero Negro from Ensenada?
I thinking with the exchange rate it is going to be a very good price right now.
I'm not set up yet but I can see how it's done by a pro.
That looks very doable for a long weekend for me. And what a long space trip it will be...

I'm going to WhalieWorld!!!
