Driving straight through from the Bay Area
We're going to be driving straight through from the Bay Area in a month, headed toward the east side of San Pedro de Martir and -- assuming that we
get into Baja before we're tired of driving -- we'll probably be looking for a place to stay before we get past Ensenada.
I like the Mother Teresa Trailer Park up Hwy 3, but we might not be able to make it that far before they close up for the night. Anybody have an idea
about a cheap and clean motel -- say, between Rosarito and Ensenada? Even making it that far will be quite enough driving for one day.
From what I hear, Ensenada itself would probably be a good place to just keep on driving through.

Well anon, if it were me, and I used to make that trip, I would avoid LA entirley. My route would be I5 to Buttonwillow to 58 east to Bakersfield, 99
south to 58 east again thru Tachapie & Mojave to Kramer Jct then South on 395 to I15 south to I215 to 30 east to I10 east to 86S in the Indio area.
South on 86S to Westmoreland. Right on Forrester rd to I8. East on I8 to 111 south to Calexico.
This would get you in ElCentro/Calexico area for a good nights rest or if you want it or cross over to Mexicali and hit Mex 5 to San Felipe for the
assault on the East flank of the Sierra San Pedro Matir.
If you come thru Ensenada, I've stayed at Motel Rudis, Ave Hidalgo #450 (Tel 646 176-3245) a nice clean reasonable priced motel.
Have a good trip and maybe I'll see you in the Valle Chico area one day soon.

Good thoughts . . . good thoughts. Thanks, Nomads.
I appreciate the steer to Papagayos, Pompano -- sounds like just what we need. I miss those old '50s motels. And I agree about bypassing LA, Bajalou
-- I'll study a map and see what my buddy thinks about that. I would rather never go through LA again en mi vida.

I did Bajalou's route. Works swell. Adding to his directs...cut off 86
Coming down 86, you can cut off Brawley and most of El Centro if you turn right at S30 (Forrester Rd, I think) at Westmorland... It takes you straight
to I8 about 10 miles west of 111.

Isn't that what he said already -- or am I missing something?
The more I think about taking that route, the better I like it. We have to get over east anyway, so why not take care of that on the way down?

I've taken it many times - I like missing the big cities. Lots of farm land and high desert to admire on the trip and I think the grades arn't quite
as steep and maybe the passes not as high. Good luck have a safe trip.
According to Delorme Topo USA 6.0 the Grapevine pass on I5 is 4261 ft and the pass on #58 is 4134 ft. Not much difference but a little. It also shows
it about 6 miles longer - 601m. vs 595m. using San Leandro as a start point and International border and Hghy 111 as the finish. I like it.

It takes you straight to I8 about 10 miles west of 111. I added the fact of the milage. Still confused? Have fun, it's a great drive.

Is La Fonda south of Mexicali?
Sounds good, but I don't see it in my Almanac.
