Off the Beaten Track in Baja was the first Erle Stanley Gardner book I owned... bought new when I was 10!
It contains (among other Baja expeditions) the story of opening the abandoned road between L.A. Bay and El Barril/Punta San Francisquito in February
1966 by the Garnder party.
That was the trip when the mystery walls were discovered near Bahia Las Animas... Walls that (Desert Magazine Editor) Choral Pepper (who was with the
group) would later determine to be part of a proposed but later deserted mission of Santa María Magdalena.
A dam, reservoir, date palm, and other interesting items are at that site... I went there in 2009 to see if the walls found on Google Earth by a Baja
Nomad (Sharksbaja) were the same as those photographed in 1966... they were! See www.vivabaja.com/109
I met Choral eighteen years ago and she told of her desire to go back to those walls but never could remember exactly where they were. I also
telephoned three other members of the Grander expedition (Bruce Barron, J.W. Black, and Ricardo Castillo). None of them remembered exactly where the
walls were.. only somewhere between L.A. Bay and El Barril. Choral hoped (and knew) I would eventually find the location. The Melchior Diaz Grave is
another of Choral Pepper's Baja mystery stories she hoped would be solved.
The wall site is not mentioned in Off The Beaten Track in Baja but photos of the road they opened are, and I found one notable grade just as difficult
when I drove that section in 2002 the first time as did the group in 1966 (two photos of it (page 202-203).
I also met Jesus Flores in 2002 as he was riding a mule past Camp Gecko. Erle Stanley Gardner wrote a chapter about him in another of his books plus a
photo in this book, on page 200 (misnaming him as Juan Flores). I took a photo of old Jesus signing my copy of The Hidden Heart of Baja at his photo
from 40 years earlier! see http://vivabaja.com/402/page6.html
