Good topic... I totally blew it this week as I had neither my typical books with me, or the AAA map with mileages (Baja Almanac, Baja Plant
Field Guide, Amphibians and Reptiles of Baja California, and an AAA map). I have also taken the Roadside Geology and Biology
book by Minch, in the past. It was great to be a mobile classroom with my two kids on our trips and those books were great.
[It was a quick 3-day trip and it is a busy time for me, so I was not focused as much a usual. It was a great trip, and I will be posting a report.]
I did have the Nat Geo maps in my glove box (and my book, Baja California Land of Missions), but those maps do not have mileages. So,
when I took the Laguna Hanson road (for the first time), I didn't have much of an idea of the distance between Hwy. 3 and Hwy. 2... it was just 58
miles, I would find out.

When we first moved here and we were still driving back and forth between Mexico and US of A, I always referred to THE BAJA HIGHWAY by John Minch
and Thomas Leslie.
As you travel south, they tell you about the geology of the area you are driving by kilometer by kilometer. There is also some info on the
plants/trees. I adore this book!

Yes, it is good... he did change the title with this newer edition published in 1998 (Minch even mentions the change on the front page):

The only thing I saw amiss in the new book (and not his fault) was that the kilometer markers south of San Quintin were changed after he published it,
so the locations in that section are off by around 2 kms.

Reminds me, I need to buy a new Spanish-English dictionary. Mine is falling apart.
Thank goodness for Kindles and WiFi. I have the Amazon bookstore at my fingertips when in Baja, at least when I drive into town.

What's on the kindle? Is It fiction or resource books. I take plenty of fiction too but that changes.

Baja Catch (great starting point for fishing)
Baja Adventure Book (dated, but still has some good info)
I also take a GPS device for mapping and a SPOT for emergencies. I will be upgrading to an inReach prior to my next big trip!

It's never the same exact titles, but always at least one of the following:
a biography
other non-fiction
fiction (novel or short stories)
one or more haiku collections or journals
other prose poetry collections
