Lanes being closed at San Ysidro, barriers hardened
https://fox5sandiego.com/2018/11/13/lane-closures-begin-at-s...
Anyone up there today? I saw some guy on tv say the Ready lane was three hours.
This looks like a lot of pointless posturing to me. Meeting a humanitarian crisis with rolling coils of barbed wire is never a good look.

Trump’s border security theatrics are a waste of money and an inconsiderate inconvenience forced upon the many thousands of people crossing the
border each day

I hadnt heard that. I thought he was going to allow anyone who applies at a legal border checkpoint to apply for asylum, under the normal procedures.
Those who try and cross illegally in the desert, dont get to claim asylum. That makes sense to me.
Follow the rules. Is that so hard to understand?
I have great empathy for these people and am no fan of The Donald, but there is a procedure to all this that needs to be followed. If you attempt to
cross illegally and THEN want to claim asylum when you are caught, that's just an attempt to circumvent the existing rules FIRST. That's not fair to
the immigrants that play by the rules to begin with.
Seriously, if your first act in a new country is breaking the law, how willing will you be to respect other laws?

Peculiar?
It seems to me that it would be unusual for these who entered Mexico and traveled through mainland Mexico would end up in Tijuana - far to the west.
The Tijuana border crossing would be more in the public spotlight if that was one of the goals.

"allow anyone who applies at a legal border checkpoint to apply for asylum"
I understand that Mexico has offered them asylum, so theoretically no need to apply for asylum in US. A spokesperson on TV explained that only a
fraction will be allowed to apply - then only a fraction of those will be granted asylum. Heard this AM that if they cross illegally they will not be
allowed to apply, and also that they will be contained in Mexico, not the US until they can apply. And that the hearing on an application will take
up to a year. Yesterday it was reported that gays, transgenders want asylum because their lifestyle choices are condemned in their country - many of
those were the first arrivals at the border.
I believe the caravan migrants have a very skewed view of what they think will happen. The US has millions who need and want "a better life" and need
to escape gang violence, and who live at poverty level and are HOMELESS.
I saw some hotel picket/strike group last week who held signs that stated "It should only take one Job". (i.e., they want a wage as a hotel
housekeeper, busboy, etc. that will support their family in San Diego.) Are you sh____ me? I worked up to 3 jobs for years to support my family and
pay the bills. Talk about skewed expectations. Getting out of control.

Hook says, " Follow the rules. Is that so hard to understand?"
Only an idiot would follow any rules that are stacked against them, especially, under this administration, where the President admits he is a
"Nationalist."
Trump, is stacking the deck with the US military along the border so the migrants can't get through the legal check point and onto US land to make
that asylum claim.
The migrants know this, and that's why they been going around check points, and making asylum claim once they get inside the US, because current laws
say it doesn't matter where you make the asylum claim as long as you do it within the US. However, Trump, is trying to change those rules too!
Thank GOD, we now have a democrat congress to put checks and balances on a racist President.
Instead of saying the laughable "follow the rules" where the immigrants, know for sure 99% of them will be turned away. You should rather say, "
follow the advise of immigration attorneys, on both sides of the border and the ACLU.

A lot of folks these days have skewed expectations in such regards.....a lot of "menial" jobs won't be applied for by white citizens as , over the
years, they have bought into the "dream" and somehow think they deserve better wages , etc.....so those jobs are often filled by those willing to work
for low wages ( e.g. new immigrants, "illegal aliens"). Who is picking your fruit, vegetables, cleaning your houses? Not a bunch of Okies....
Many of us "worked our way up" the employment ladder to develop a living wage....some of us had the luxury of a good education, a work ethic that
wasn't riddled with a sense of entitlement, and a grasp of the language when we started out.
We need to be very careful about this movement pointing out how the newcomers to our countries are taking our jobs away....lotsa white folks don't
want those jobs....
So the "legal asylum" issue is only part of the iceberg.
The Trump tax cuts to corporate America haven't appeared to be reinvested in creating jobs as much as for share buybacks and dividend
payments....short-term profit for corporate America that is happy with their investment returns now....(short term gain)....leaving a huge loss of
tax revenue that will be carried as national debt just around the corner.....
The expectations of migrants/ immigrants may not be different than those of some of your neighbours....and I don't think they are walking hundreds of
risky kilometers to expect a free hand-out life....
Don't believe everything you think....

Wilderone, most of your post above is correct, the US isn't planning on letting the caravan migrants in. Mexico, did offer some migrants, asylum, but
I don't see where they offered them jobs, especially at a living wage.
Sadly, there were bogus reports about gay caravan members coming to the border and wanting to get inside the US. This is just another scare tactic
that is now being used because I guess the ISIS middle eastern caravan BS tales just wasn't believable to most people.
Not surprisingly, a gay ex-member of "Baja Nomad" who turned very anti-Mexico, posted a photo of supposedly gay caravan members coming to the US on
Facebook, and as a scare tactic. ( I will post it below) shame on him.
Wilderone, I support hotel workers in San Diego, wanting a living wage, especially in San Diego, where rents and mortgages are so high.
In Las Vegas, the hotel workers got together years ago, and unionized, and now most of those workers are making good money working in the casinos, and
the most of the casinos are doing fine.
That union, got their workers to get out to vote, and probably swung the election for the Senate Democrat candidate in Nevada.
So it could be done and I can't see why the same thing can't happen in San Diego.

Expect the Worst
Donald Trump knows that he must hold his base regardless of how that may affect other constituencies. If the base erodes, he's history.
Perhaps the most important social issue to that energized base is the question of border security and immigration,
He will do whatever he feels necessary to appear resolute in any border confrontation.

You'd be surprised at how many of my Democrat friends are for border security and tightening immigration laws and even repealing the 14th
amendment.........but are not for The Wall. I am an independent who feels this way.
Don't, for a second, believe that ultra liberal Dems like Pelosi and Schumer speak for the moderate Democrat. 56% of Dems want Pelosi gone, as the
Democratic House Leader, in a poll I saw yesterday. Schumer just got re-upped, but he is a minority leader. Not as important.
Some of these moderates even helped elect Trump. Yes, they do exist, just like some moderate Democrats were just elected by people who undoubtedly
voted for Trump in 2016.
There is a wide gulf between conservative Republicans and liberal Democrats that DO decide elections. In fact, with as fractured as the country is,
these are the swing voters...........when they vote. I think there are issues on both sides of the aisle that many voters can agree with.
But the national party leadership is all about confrontation with the other side. They are nothing but political beasts who think fighting is
leadership.
