Season's Opener Whale trip to Laguna Ojo de Liebre
The Gray whale migration is late this year but we saw about 7 cow/calf pairs and one skinny male on our first trip out on the lagoon Ojo de Liebre by
Guerrero Negro a few days ago. It was a gray day but nice and calm as we set out with my brother, sister in law, a family staying with us and my pals
Baja Gypsy & the whale guy Steve.
As expected the moms were protecting their newborn calves so we gave them their space. Here is a little pickle head baby...each of those dimples are
actually hair follicles! and the fetal folds show it was only a few days old.
this little whale was about 3 weeks old and born on the migration route down...we can tell the age of calves by the scar tissue and birth marks...if
there is white on it, it is over weeks old.
We had a nice visit with amigo & guide for me, Zihul Martinez who has an incredible shop featuring his artisania...handmade knives and jewellery
and much more. Well worth a visit when you are in GN...turn right at the first street after Terra Sal and go down a couple blocks and it's on the
left.

Did you see the clothing optional group? Looking a little cool for it but who knows...?
I guess you still have to wear the life jacket so that sort of spoils it a little. And the freezing your burro part might take away from the fun...
Butt congratulations on Whale Season 2019 anyway

yeah... saw that but figured I'd better not get in the fray....hahaha, I prefer jigging to trolling.
in the old days on a hot day some of us would strip down and jump in the lagoon to cool off...always a highlight of the season!

I couldn't resist. This place ain't as funny as it use to be.
Like a hot day on the water... in the old days... was more fun...
Guessing they are still waiting for that email for a boat captain who will take out a bunch of naked fat tourists so they can smootch baby whales...

the migration and arrival of whales in the lagoon is a couple weeks behind schedule which means that they will probably stick around a bit later to
give the calves a chance to build up strength to make the trip north.
In Laguna Ojo de Liebre, which is the principle calving lagoon that usuall has between 1,500 t over 2,000 whales in it...it fills up first and so
empties out sooner than San Ignacio.
The nursing groups of whales that hang out in the inner lagoon move out toward the mouth in mid March so that's where the best viewing is for the
remainder of March.
There are whales there into April but our buddies we make friends with throughout the season are gone. We identify the most cooperative whales...the
ones that enjoy playing with the pangas and we look for them and they look for us every day to hang out with. In late March whales migrating up will
enter the mouth and rest up a bit but they arent as fun or dependable as our friends!
I thought that the early onset of winter may make the migration early but as the fishing season was over a month late...so is the migration...weird.
The census takers in southern California are seeing lots of newborn calves on the route.
