Puerto Santo Tomas/ Something different/ Tuna
So I often go to hang out at Puerto Santo Tomas and fish with the locals from the little village next to the resort. Always a ton of bottom fish and
often bonito, barracuda, and the occasional yellowtail. Sam who runs the place had been contacted by a commercial fisherman in Ensenada to offered
to come to PST, do some local fishing, and take my friend Rick and I out to the the reefs that are about ten miles out and beyond the range of the
local pangas. Heck. Why not try it? Well we did it and overall a great Baja experience! It's not ready for prime time yet but we bottom fished for
tons of rockfish and whitefish and then saw the yellowfin jumping at Soledad reef (also saw a finback whale and a black marlin). The water was
warming up as the day went on. Hooked two tuna (one yellowfin broke off under the boat) and landed a 35-40 lb bluefin. Nothing crazy great as to a
fishing report but it was fun to do something different. Captain Benjamin and his crew member Molina were awesome...really knew their stuff. Not for
everybody but it had a great Baja vibe!

Nice fish! Looks like an interesting platform to fish from, watch your step to the left of you. One mis-timed swell and you're "man overboard!"

Congrats! Are you fishing out of PST or Ensenada?

Nice fish and a fun day out doing something different. "Get off the beaten path and memories, friends and new techniques are developed".
I think that will be part of my new mantra starting next week when I start a new life adventure based in San Felipe and hanging out all over Baja.

Interesting. RHT, you get any sense from the locals in the cooperativo at PST that they had any issues with this?

Yes as to the open rails being a bit nuts. We waited on the "dock" with the local uni divers (not "fish" fishermen) so there wasn't much of a feeling
of treading on someone's turf...but I totally understand and get that. Though they can be a tough crowd...a lot of drugs...a crazy way to make a
living. Never had any issues and have fished with only Marcos and the locals for over 20 years...have bought a lot from them and tipped them
generously when helping or filleting. I figured a weekend run with someone else was not extreme. But I know there are turf wars in situations like
this. Chinto helped us out quite a bit and he seems to be able to move between the different factions. I just wanted to stand up for once fishing at
PST...little did I know it would come with the risk of falling out!!!!
