Tijuana 1964: The Photography of Harry Crosby - February 7, 2020

Fri, February 7, 2020
5:00 – 7:00 PM PST

Wisteria Cottage - La Jolla Historical Society
780 Prospect Street
San Diego, CA 92037

Harry Crosby moved to La Jolla as a boy in 1935. In the 1950s, he had 12-year career as a science teacher at La Jolla High School, then pursued a second career in photography and history. One of his early assignments was to photograph Tijuana, where he discovered and recorded the vibrant life of the city and neighborhoods beyond common tourist areas. The rich photographic images he created of Tijuana’s urban and human landscapes chronicles community life and daily events. Tijuana 1964: the Photography of Harry Crosby presents an exhibition of original photographs from the period, crossing the international border to explore the shops, arcades, street vendors, fashions, vehicles, curios, churches, cemeteries, and diverse urban neighborhoods of the bustling Mexican city more than a half-century ago. Curated by Melanie Showalter. Opening reception is Friday, Feb 7th. The exhibition continues from Feb 8th through May 17th (2020).

Pre-registration is *required* (and free!), at:
https://www.eventbrite.com/e/tijuana-1964-the-photography-of...

Funding for this exhibition generously provided by Sandy and Dave Erickson, Margie and John H. Warner Jr., the Florence Riford Fund of the San Diego Foundation, and ArtWorks San Diego.

The Society is immensely grateful for loans from the photographic collection and for the support of the Instituto Municipal de Arte y Cultura (IMAC), the Museo de Historia de Tijuana (MUHTi), and the Archivo Histórico de Tijuana (AHT); for additional materials from the Crosby Baja Collection at the University of California, San Diego; and for the support of the Institute for Regional Studies of the Californias at San Diego State University.

Look how big the liquor store is! Also, notice that it is written in both languages.

I bet this is going to be an amazing photographic exhibition and I sure wish we could be there.

## ADDED info, as of January 20, 2020: ##

As a complement to the Harry Crosby Photos of Tijuana 1964 event, Outside the Lens has partnered with the LJ Historical Society to concurrently present "Tijuana 2019", a collection of student work from the FOTO TJ project. FOTO TJ is a journey exploring the sites and sounds of La Frontera, bringing together the creative forces of teens from both San Diego and Tijuana. This visits human rights, arts and culture, and social benefit organizations working in Tijuana, while capturing the stories of those impacted by their work. Youth had the opportunity to explore, understand, and express their vision of the Baja region through the power of film and photography. Students took part in a genre study looking at the work of Harry Crosby, and created Tijuana 2019 as a photo response, a series of images captured in the same places and spaces as Crosby's work.

Students explored Harry Crosby's original photos at the Museo de Historia de Tijuana (MUHTI), and had a guided historical street tour by Christian Zuñiga. In understanding the Tijuana of past, students created images that speak to Tijuana in the present.
