Baja Car - Smog Questions

We have a car we leave down in Baja.
This year it will need a smog check in California to renew registration.

Is it possible to get a smog check prior to receiving the renewal letter?

Other than South Dakota option...what do most people do? Driving it up to smog and then take it back down is kinda nice but wondering if I can do it when the timing works for me.

Change the address for the car to the Baja address and it will be automatically exempt. Plus if you get mail they can mail the stickers to you in Baja or do the reg at AAA or DMV 60 days in advance and pick them up. Also consider Declaration of non active to stop paying US Ins while maintaining Reg.
