Bug ID

What are they? Thousands emerged a few days ago and now they seem to be starting to die.

Perhaps the die-off is because they have laid their eggs and will soon be hatching larva.
I have been fighting the south American palm weevil [we would call it a beetle, locals use the word pecudo] i have lost a number of large palm. This invasion has reached San Diego, and is killing some spectacular palms.

They are starting to fly now too, seems like they have done the deed and are off to lay eggs somewhere to start the whole cycle again.

What a great resource - I tried the bot way with goog image search - nothing.
Of course, the bug has a wiki page, that is interesting yet again. This beetle is a power house of talent.

dig some more you find the blister properties link to the toxic secretions and then to the term Spanish Fly and the aphrodisiac potential. So the bug has some Bill Cosby heritage also.
