I liked the situation I had for the past 6 months on Bahia Concepcion. I had to drive 15 miles into Mulege to get a good Inet connection and about 10
miles to get a cell signal. Best of both worlds, off the grid, but close to it. It turns out about 1 hour a week on the Internet met my digital needs
and when at "home" on the bay I didn't waste any time on the Internet, like I'm doing now.

Wow, I don't understand that reaction. The Mexicans in Mulege all have excellent cell and Internet service if they want it. In Loreto too. The spots
in between are sparsely populated. The capability for cell and Internet is there, but there's not enough customers for the provider companies to
profitably provide the service. Heck, there's not even electricity or running water.

Shocked? You just made my case. I lived on the B de C for 2 years via Solar power. Mi amigo had spotty sattelite internet that he shared with us.

This cable will bring faster and cheaper inet to La Paz and Cabo where they already have both DSL and wireless. BOLA is 900 km from La Paz, I doubt
they will get anything out of this.

Space X will be selling their LEO internet service next year. It will do voice and data for $60/month as well as be portable. Satellite currently
works OK but you can’t do voice on it. Cell service is nonexistent where we are.

Where/when did you see the first phone in Baja ? Below the border towns ?
Early/mid-70s, I still remember leaving (now long gone) Arnold's in San Felipe one night after dinner and was surprised to encounter
a pay phone on the walk. Wow ! Turned out the phone service was local only, still ............
Once service was extended to Mexicali and beyond, we'd go over to Panaderia Linda where they had a table with handsets. You'd give
the proprietor the number you wanted to call, she'd point you to a phone, call the operator and start a timer when you picked up. An older couple we
knew would instead always go over to the switching office and use one of the two pay phones outside claiming the service was more reliable. Knowing
their habits well, I think it was because they were just too cheap to pay the Panaderia rate.

Do you know what speeds they will provide? Sounds good, but knowing Musk's history the real release date is probably a couple years beyond what he is
projecting. He is usually way overly optimistic about the timeline - but he eventually gets it done no question. Just finished his biography, good
read if anyone is interested.

They (Musk) are talking gigabit speeds ultimately! They say part of the U.S. and Canada this year most everywhere else by the end of next year. Our
military is already testing it. The delay will be around 10MS rather than the 800MS with Hughes and Exide the current common choices.

When our family built our Bajamar home in 1978, we had to use marine radio service to communicate from our SoCal home by pretending to be a ship at
sea. Others did this too and it was very entertaining to listen to the ship to shore calls around 5:00pm each day. c-cktail hour was a blast back
then. One idiot called his GF to hook up and forgot he was on the radio, very entertaining, later on every one ratted him out to his wife.
In 1988 the first Telcel phone line pedestal was installed in Bajamar. We leveraged it to create our own private phone network for the homes along the
bluff.
Two, 24 pair cables enclosed in buried irrigation tubing was installed by our family and we sold the phone circuits to 20 homes. Subsequent private
efforts eventually served both misions. Fully operational still

Things change but it's nice to reminisce about the old Baja we were first entranced by...
55 years have passed since I was introduced to Baja California, much has changed, more roads paved, more people live there, more fences and locked
gates, and other 'evils' of civilization like 24-hour electricity and cell service, Internet, etc.
Yet, I still love the place and hope to go back... at least one more time!
