In addition to adding good soil= Have you tried making your own compost from kitchen waste?

At my home in Ensenada (as well as in San Diego) I've had to amend the soil to grow veggies. All kitchen waste goes into a bin where worms go to work on it, and then the resulting compost is mixed into the garden near the plants.

Depending on how much food you prep, it can take time to fill a compost bin. But composting is a great way to improve soil nutrients using food you've already paid for vs. buying bags of soil that will be depleted by the plants after several months of gardening.
