Wednesday is Hump Day

Humpback whale day that is!

While fishing these last few weeks out of Puerto San Carlos we noticed on our last few trips outside of the bay in el mar abierto, as the kids call it, lots of whale spout sign. Since they were staying offshore we, my tocayo and myself, figured them to be humpbacks and they were indeed.

Last Wednesday they came in closer, just a few miles outside of Isla Santa Margarita and maybe 5 miles south from the boca.

We trolled around and they moved in closer. Eventually there were 4 close to us and another 3 or so further away. Earlier had also seen a few grays but they do not tend to play when in the open water like humpbacks sometimes choose to do. We were lucky that these humpbacks came over to us and played around a bit.

Regarding greys, only a couple in the local waters near Puerto Chale now but the season is just beginning of course.

The kids had a blast, hooting and a hollering, me too.
Managed to get a few videos and here is one. Not the greatest video and it on a public setting on FB.
