FMM tourist permits
Hey all,
I know they're technically required, but does everyone get FMMs every time they go to baja? heading down for a week and wondering if we'll be ok if we
skip out on getting them this trip.

You should always get one. They are good for 6 months, multiple entry.
There were just reports of them checking for them in BCS.

Yss, you should get one. Some Mexican insurance requires them. Occasionally they do check!

What's with you people who act like you have some right to enter another country without respecting their immigration laws? It's some pesky annoyance
to get a tourist card, so you are entitled to ignore it? Mexico isn't your personal playground. Show some respect.

At the Mexicali west crossing, for the last few months. Mex Imm
has not been issuing the free 6 nt, 7 day fmm's, sighting
the virus situation, other crossings may be different. If I was
going for the free 7 day, I would pre print it off the Mex Imm
site

Regarding FMMs, just an FYI. My travel club filled out my FMM w/o my middle name which is on my passport. The agent at the border was not happy with
this! While he did not make me get a new FMM, he did warn me to make sure that in the future, my name on the FMM exactly matches my name on my
passport.

When you are at the INM building to get the FMM, and you watch dozens of U.S. plated vehicles go past without stopping, you have to wonder just how
this passes the test of time. Sure, we read of the very rare, surprise immigration checkpoint, but never anyone we know personally has been turned
back to the border, right?
Seriously, a good thing they don't stop every car and ask to see your FMM or visa! Otherwise, we would never even get into Mexico before midnight!

My 2 centavos...
Having your name match documents (passport being the dominate document here) with FMM and TIP for vehicles (mainland requirement) as well as your
drivers license and vehicle title (also applies to mainland) or so I've been told.

In all the years I have gotten my FMM, this was the first my middle name was not on it - normally I am vigilant, but at least he stamped it! I'm sure
it was my omission and not the travel club's.

I've always wondered about this! They certainly don't seem to streamline the process of getting permits at border crossings I've done. In Mexicali
East and Tecate I've had to hop curbs or park somewhere on the streets and walk back just to get myself into the immigration office for my FMM.
These photos are from my confusing process at Tecate in 2018 trying to figure out how to walk back into the border crossing area to get my FMM
(without accidentally finding myself back in the USA minus my car):
 
Mexicali East. I can't make this right turn into the parking lot without hopping that huge curb.

LOTS of Mex citizens, either living in the US or Mex drive US plated cars back and forth across the border, especially in the TJ area. They don't need
to stop at INM. Those living in Mex are illegally importing the cars. TJ cops routinely set up roadblocks looking for the "chocolates", as the
illegally imported cars are called.
