Uber or Lyft. I shared a ride with 7 others a few years ago into North County from the Santa Fe Station. There are Uber/Lyft drivers who own vans, probably more profitable for them as well with more passengers.

The trolley goes at least to Santee, another cheaper option. Looks like the Orange Line has a La Mesa Blvd. station.

Uber xl for up to 6. Uber x less. You might find a van service for less than uber, google is where to start.

+1. San Diego has developed a pretty darn good public transit. I can walk from my house in Carlsbad to the Coaster Station and be at the airport without a hassle. A quick switch to the Trolley in Old Town, and Petco Park is easily accessed as is downtown, east county, and the border. Even UCSD and SDSU!

No brainer, Trolley. Efficient, inexpensive, convenient and scenic.

Not enough public transport like this in population centers NOB.

Yes, there is a downtown La Mesa trolley stop. From that point, and with a change to the Blue line downtown SD, it will take you longer than if you got a ride closer, but certainly doable. Get your Pronto pass accounts online, put money in the account ($5.00), and tap and go. You can sign up for student fare, senior fare, and the price will never be higher than a day pass no matter how many buses or trolley trips in one day. (OR pay cash at the station.)

Can't say about 8-people vans. Uber XL is apparently for 6, and 1 seat next to the driver is off limits due to Covid - so it must be 5 seats now? Trolley is fine if you don't have a lot of luggage and don't worry about being close to a few dozen people for more than an hour, during Covid. Cheap and reasonably fast, should take 1.5 hours.
