A PEMEX tanker truck caught fire on the northbound Free Road last night at Cuesta Blanca.

Holy moly. Looks like the entire cab burnt up. Can't imagine the driver survived.

Miracle that the driver was not hurt and that the cargo did not explode. Someone is counting their lucky stars!

Maybe it was empty... although fumes are more explosive than liquid fuel, right?

Correct! I worked on the demolition of warehouse on a pier that had burned in Cordova, Alaska. In the rubble was the remains of a boat that was completely destroyed, except for a full tank of gasoline (probably a couple of hundred gallons). No fumes, no explosion!

The local workers on the job were ecstatic, because gasoline has always been very expensive in remote ports off of the road system.

Pemex Truck on Fire Video

While searching for the source of the Miraflores Fire story (that was really in Santiago per Nomads), I found the short video clip of the Pemex Truck fire:

I watched a semi burn like that on Donner Summit about eight years ago! It was at the bottom of sweeping turn westbound from the summit, and it had just started snowing. I was toward the front of a massive pileup that trapped me there for four hours.

My Kia was not damaged, but it was trapped! I was not allowed to stay in my car because the CHP and Sherrif's department could not find the driver to determine what the cargo was, and if it could explode.

It turned out that the driver was standing right near me, but he was from Mexico and did not speak English, or know they were looking for him!
