20 dead after bus, truck collide in Mexico

Associated Press
Apr. 6, 2005 11:30 AM

CIUDAD CONSTITUCION, Mexico - A bus collided with a truck on a highway near the southern tip of the Baja California peninsula, killing 20 people and injuring about two dozen, federal police said Wednesday.

The bus was returning to Ciudad Constitucion, about 320 miles north of the resort of Los Cabos, on Tuesday night when it struck a truck carrying fish meal, state government spokesmen Luis Miguel Castro said.

The passengers were returning from the inauguration of southern Baja California state Gov. Narciso Agundez Montano in the capital, La Paz. The victims included women, men and some children, Castro said.

The cause of the crash is under investigation. Initial reports indicated the accident happened when the bus tried to pass another vehicle.

There was no immediate information on the condition of the survivors, who were being treated at hospitals in La Paz. Officials said the death toll could rise.

I past today on the site of the accident at 3pm.
Only the destroyed truck was there. The bus was already moved to Constitucion.
The road is straight and has a little hill that could have blocked vision of lights of other bus/truck on the other side till last moment.

A three-vehicle crash on the Transpeninsular Highway in Baja California Sur has left at least 20 people dead and 22 others injured in what is being described as the greatest traffic tragedy that this sparsely populated state has known.

Most of the victims were working-class political activists who had been celebrating the inauguration of a new governor in the state capital of La Paz. The accident occurred at 10:45 p.m. Tuesday as they returned by bus from La Paz to their homes in Ciudad Constituci?n.

"It was a very happy event for us," said Mario Orozco Ramos, an official with the Party of the Democratic Revolution, or PRD, in Ciudad Constituci?n.

Ramos said Narciso Ag?ndez Monta?o, the governor-elect and a PRD member, had invited the activists. The city is about 140 miles north of La Paz.

Monta?o told the victims' families that the state would underwrite the funeral costs.

The accident took place about 40 miles south of Ciudad Constituci?n on the Transpeninsular Highway, which runs the length of the Baja California peninsula.

According to Mexico's Federal Preventive Police, the driver of the northbound bus drifted into the lane of a southbound tractor-trailer, leading to a head-on collision. A Ford sedan crashed into the bus from behind.

The Baja California Sur Attorney General's Office listed 20 dead, including the drivers of the bus and tractor-trailer, and a 6-year-old girl. According to federal police, at least 17 of those killed were on the bus.

Thanks Doug!

I missed this Post. Benn too concerned about this Mare who is due to foal nearly anytime!

Many years ago there were 14 People Killed when a Car reported to be going over 100 MPH went into a group of Marchers going south to protest the closing of nearly 1/2 of the Land which was in use in the Area. Wells were starting to go Dry.
I just thought it was strange to happen with in a few miles of each place.

Be extra careful on that streach of Highway.

god bless them all.
