Beach West of Alfonsinas

Does anyone have any information about the beach West of Alfonsinas? Is there access? The first road just South of the checkpoint has 2 fences across it with no gates and there seems to be an abandoned camper there. The fences and camper aren't on Google maps streetview yet. Looks like there are possibly a few more entrances to the South.

At the north end of the beach is a fisherman's camp with no road access that i know of, the ice truck that services the camp stops on hwy 5 and fish and Ice are transferred there.

It is a fun beach to explore by kayak. Its not good for swimming very shallow and lots of sting rays.

See the mission warehouse site at the far end, by the hillside. This is where people and cargo were dropped off, heading for the missions founded after 1768, including San Diego.

This photo pointed to where Alfonsina's would be, shows the beach in question, as it was.

Fish camp beach very trashy. Better choice is to go to " Papa Fernandez " camp and go to the beach just over the hill' ( small fee for camping )

from Papa's you can walk over there at low tide, there's nothing to see. throughout the 80's and 90's it was a thriving fish camp community with boats coming and going all night long, some even had fish;)

Last time I looked, I think there was an opening in the fence a few hundred yards south of the abandoned military checkpoint. Was some abandoned fisherman trucks at the opening.

Looked like a person could drive out from there to the beach/ fishcamp area

Thanks for the info everyone. We are just trying to find a beach we can spend the day and have all to ourself. No overnight camping. El Faro has been nice in the past, but not very sandy. Decent fishing. I think we’ll try our luck with the Papa Fernandez beach. Any tips on who to get to open the gate and pay on a Thursday morning?

I believe Alphonsinas is claiming fishcamp beach and denying access.

All the beaches in Gonzaga are getting claimed, the big land rush that everyone has been waiting for with the new road has finally hit hard.

Papas is getting pretty trashy also, unless a big wind the day before blows it away.

The south end of El Faro and Punta Buffeo are nice, and free.

Papa Fernandez beach is a good choice. There is always a guy to open gate when you get there. He wont miss you.

We have been to La Poma, but didn’t try to hang out at Bufeo. Maybe we’ll try that first. Seems like a pretty busy beach however, not a lot of open space with the restaurant/camp and the houses.

I agree, the land rush is a shame. Really wish we could get to the beach East of Punta Final. I’m sure those 4 condos will never be built. What a waste of beach.

Found the perfect beach for us before even getting to Bufeo. Will post a trip report when we get back to San Diego.
