pangas 'fishermen' and 'drugs'
for those baja full timers annd those well accuainted with the area is it true that 'drug runners' use the coast as a shipping route for thier
products?
are there shiny new pangas with nice new outboards and no fishing gear?

Have heard interesting reports of "large bales of something" being dropped of by pangas very near the Hotel Posada de las Flores at Punta Chivato,
then being guarded by Federales before being loaded onto planes at the airstrip.

It would be my suggestion that if you are to remain in Baja, live in peace, keep all of your Arms and legs, that you stay away from Drugs in all forms
and shapes!
Several years ago the Drug Lords would buy a Panga, a 200 Hp Motor, fill it with bales of Dope and send the young men across the Sea of Cortez to
spots all along the coast, then one bright morning the Feds started Shooting, killing one near San Sebastion, another on the East side of Carmen, then
a shoot out at the pier in Loreto.
there are all kinds of true stories, Be Careful!!

In the '70's the enforcers cut ruts in the final stretch of the La Gringa road. My assumption was that it was cut to stop it's use as a landing
strip. Don't know. Don't want to know. But I don't see it happening anymore so maybe...it's over and done with. One can only hope.

Strips in the 70's
In the 70's when I first started flying into Baja I went to every small strip I could find, land and visit with the People.
When the Drugs started the Feds came in an literally destroyed all theses small strips, cutting ditches, placing large boulders and closing the
strips.
A large 51 Ft. Yacht was "Blown out of the Water" one night as it refused to stop and be searched. 105 mm Cannon made short work of it and its Crew.
Stay away from Drugs!!!!!

Haven't seen any shiny new super pangas lately in our area on the Pacific between San Ignacio and Mag Bay. But it's been very discouraging to discover
that crystal meth has become so prolific in the neighboring pueblo of 450, amongst the pangeros, the kids, the parents, the gasolinero, the torta
lady... I guess it costs less than a buck to get high.
Would have blamed the mainland shrimp boats that fill up the bay some seasons, but they weren't around this year and the use of the stuff seems to be
effecting every household in town. We're not located in a hot spot for any land- based drug transport operation because the terracerias are so crappy.
Maybe the fires that we see aren't always coming from the dump nowadays, but are the local production facilities in town. We also had our first
break-in this year and although we figured it would happen someday, it was disappointing nonetheless.
The stuff just sucks on so many levels, especially when I think of the smart,cute kids we've been watching grow up.

Super pangas custom made to cross the Sea of Cortez at high speeds are everywhere, they are made to smuggle marijuana. Usually the trip is made by two
or more pangas, one is full with up to 3 tons of cannabis depending on the size of the Panga, and another one acts like a floating gas tank, providing
fuel for the long and dangerous trip.
