Security Message for U.S. Citizens: Hospitals in Los Cabos Area
In recent years, the U.S. Consulate General in Tijuana has received numerous complaints from U.S. citizens regarding health-care facilities in Los
Cabos. As a result, the U.S. Consulate encourages its staff and official visitors to Los Cabos to refrain from using medical facilities that
do not appear on the Consulate’s publicly-available list of hospitals.
U.S. citizens should be aware of their rights under Mexican law. Most Mexican healthcare facilities require payment “up front” prior to performing a
procedure. Most hospitals in Mexico do not accept U.S. domestic health insurance or Medicare/Medicaid and will only accept payment via cash, credit,
debit card, or bank transfer. We encourage visitors to obtain as much information as possible about facilities and their medical personnel when
considering surgical or other procedures; when possible, patients should travel with a family member or another responsible party.
Complaints documented by the Consulate include allegations that some Los Cabos-area hospitals have withheld care for payment, engaged in price
gouging, failed to itemize charges, withheld U.S. passports, obstructed needed medical evacuations, gave monetary incentives to ambulances for
delivering patients to specific facilities, and held patients at hospitals against their will pending payment.

I was able to find this very short list of doctors and hospitals throughout baja on the Consulate's website. The focus seems to be on Tijuana. How
they put the list together is not explained. Plus in the introduction they say that inclusion on the list is not an endorsement. I'm skeptical of its
value. It was published about 3 years ago. I know Tijuana pretty well and the hospital many think to be the best, Hospital Angeles is not on the list.
In my opinion first hand experience by nomads is worth more than this list, but here it is:

As a consulate, how they put the list together is probably from fewer complaints by US citizens. And since they don't actually test care at these
various hospitals, of course they can't endorse them. They are simply reporting the hospitals that have fewer complaints.
Have you actually been to Hospital Los Angeles?

Its commom here in Los cabos for several ambulances to show up at an accident. Seems
their number one objective is to stick an IV in you and then your are theirs.
The best option for Nomads is Seguro Popular or IMSS Seguros Social which are availabele
for all permanent residents.
These four Hospitals services were suspended last week in Los cabos because
services provided did not include full price.

Aplicó PROFECO suspensiones a 4 hospitales privados de #LosCabos
A brigade of the Federal consumer Attorney (PROFECO), yesterday make visits of inspection
to private hospitals operating in Cabo San Lucas and San José de el Cabo, where placed seals
suspension in four establishments where inconsistencies were found.
The operational surprise of the federal unit showed that there were irregularities at the
Amerimed hospitals in two branches, Saint Josephs and One World so proceeded to the
suspension of services. This in accordance with article 8 of the Federal consumer law, since
the services provided in these private
hospitals do not provide the full price

In my opinion, if you are having a health emergency in the Los Cabos area, such as a heart attack, Amerimed and Blue Net both have state of the art
facilities. The cost should not really be an issue if you live.
