MEX1 FROM LOS BARRILES TO SAN JOSE
Hola,
just posted on bajaponyexpress.
8/10/16 Road report: The road is perfect from Los Barriles to San Jose. Warning! We traveled last night at 8PM. There are cows all along (and on)
the roadside between LB and San Jose. We stopped counting at 60.
OBVIOUSLY...DO NOT DRIVE AT NIGHT !!! POSSIBLY GOING NORTH AS WELL ?

Well, that's a nice change of pace because it's usually goats I see along there.
Cows are easier to see and I don't think they move as fast as those little weed eating speedsters.

When you are thinking if it is two L's or two R's, just remember two L's make a Y sound, like in Tortilla...

You are very welcome.
i sure do hope i can spell the town i lived in and loved for for about seven years. prior to that, myself and about 30 friends used to fish at palmas
and other great towns in baja sur.

I still can remember eating dinner, family style at Rancho Buena Vista Resort, in 1966.
At the dinner table,
One of the guests asked my dad if we just flew in...
My dad responded that we drove.
The other guest said, oh, you took the new ferry across from Mazatlan and drove down from La Paz?
My dad said, no, we drove all the way down the peninsula from Tijuana!
The guest looked to be in shock, and said, "LET ME SHAKE YOUR HAND!"
Those are some of the wonderful memories I have of Baja before pavement!

Hola DK,
your family must have been extremely adventurous. i've driven from tijuana to los barriles about seven times but i cannot imagine what it was like
prior to mex 1 being paved all the way to cabo.
bringing food and drinks, buying gas, having flats, having enough water, ETC.
i am glad people like yourselves post reports and pictures from the past so we can try and envision the hardships you went through...and the joys of
being the early pioneers seeing what baja was like then.

I am of the generation that spans old with new... Highway 1 was completed the year I got my driver's license. My parents had a Jeep Wagoneer and we
began Baja exploring in 1965. That 1966 Tijuana to Cabo trip was an amazing adventure. Imagine going 100-150 miles in a day and that was a good day!
Pavement ended near Colonet and didn't begin again until 100 miles before La Paz, and ended again 10 miles south of La Paz. No grading, just a pair of
ruts (single lane dirt) from El Rosario to San Ignacio then again south of Mulege through Comondu and single track again south of San Bartolo to Cabo
San Lucas and up to Todos Santos. Passing another car was rare.. if you did come to someone going the other way, it was cause for a social meeting to
ask about the road ahead.
