A startup airplane manufacturer said this week it will open a factory in Tijuana that could create up to 1,000 jobs.
Icon Aircraft, a Vacaville-based company, said it will use its new 300,000-square-foot factory to build components for its A5 aircraft, an amphibious
sport plane.
By selecting Tijuana, it raises the profile of a manufacturing sector that has seen steady growth.
“Tijuana has a skilled labor force, a lot of aerospace, automotive and industrial-type technology,” said Icon spokesman Brian Manning about its
reasons for the move. “And, frankly, the industrial infrastructure they have there.”
“We found good talent (In Vacaville) and we know that we’re going to find great talent in Mexico as well,” Manning said. “. . . We’re joining a lot of
other reputable companies that are there.”
More than 158,000 jobs are tied to manufacturing in the city, said the Tijuana Economic Development Corp.
There are eight industrial buildings under construction, adding 749,889-square feet, said Colliers International.
Tijuana added 1,456,635 square feet of industrial space from first quarter 2015 to first quarter 2016, Colliers said.

Not all that long ago, the cartel people were hanging dead bodies from overpasses. And the North Baja communities were suffering from a major lack of
business. This is amazing news.

It's been a steady thing, even during the drug war. But of course the drug war captured the news. "If it bleeds, it leads."
The recession slowed things down but that's over. The condo developments between TJ and Ensenada are selling and the number of new houses east of the
toll road is impressive.

Living 70 mi. no. of TJ, many of my friends would spend time
SOB, it's in our backyard, we grew up going across the border, and they are just now going back. after avoiding Baja for the last 8 yrs. I would tell
them the violence did not involve tourists,
but as pointed out, it is impossible to explain away hanging bodies. Not to mention the false info. that one needs a passport
to return to the US, that effectively eliminates approx. 50% of US
citizens. But border drive over tourism is good, I believe, but
standing in the ped line coming back at SY, I don't see many,
if any Joe Gringo tourists like me
