camping/Climbing near La Mission/La Fonda
Hello Nomads!
it feels good to be posting on here again, becuase it means i'm living near Baja again!
Im thinking about going down to La Mission this saturday/Sunday for some camping surfing and rock climbing. I was wondering if anyone knew of any
nice spots to camp in the La Mission area? im not opposed to staying at La Fonda or other coastal locations nearby. Anyone have any good
recommendations? i rarely ever am, but i always feel the need to ask, should i be concerned for my safety camping in these areas?
Also, i know there is a nice little Crag nearby to La Mission. i have been able to find a bit of information about it. It also appears as if there is
a guide book for the area that is no longer in print. Please refer me to anyone who might have any good beta on this location. Thanks much. Hope

for climbing try el salto just up the free road from la mision....just do a search here
for camping how about chuy's, close to all the bars and restaurant...just stay back from the cliff! K52

We use to climb the mushroom shaped water tower on the hill behind LaMision. Puff puff pass. Man that view is awesome!

The climbing area that you are describing on the hill above La Misión is called "La Misión" by Mexican climbers. (Learn to spell and pronounce it
correctly to communicate effectively with Mexican climbers).
An estadounidense (USA) climber, Randy Vogel, published a small guidebook 20 years ago. He called it "Valle Azteca", a name which was completely made
up from what I understand. The crag is not even located in a valley. AFAIK, it's mostly Ensenada and Tijuana climbers who frequent the crag and call
it "La Misión". The guide is out of print. I have a copy somewhere.

I'm currently assisting with bolt replacement efforts by gathering bolts (316 SS, with Fixe SS hangers, and loaning hardware and a Bosch rotohammer.

Some of the primary La Misión climbers will be joining me in the Sierra de Juarez /Canyon Tajo this weekend to learn more about bolting techniques.
Perhaps you could locate a partner on the Facebook page.
Willardguy mentioned El Salto, a rocky canyon. There seems to be some hiking and rappelling activity there, but few established routes, AFAIK.
IMHO, camping on the coast between Tijuana and Ensenada is perhaps "mostly safe" when in a gated and patrolled developed campground. Times have
changed. Property crimes and car burglaries are rampant. An unattended tourist's vehicle, full of gear, is a likely target for thieves.

There is a fairly safe campground at K-58 just before La Mision.
Great project for Maderita.

If you are camping at k58, you can hike up the riverbed at the North end of the campground until you reach a rock wall formation inside of one mile.
This is not well known but people have shown up specifically for this climb. Snake season is still on so keeping standard vigilance is in order. If
you are parked in the campground, your vehicle should be safe. As mentioned before, do not leave your vehicle unattended on the roads in this area.
