Isn't that what some husbands/wives do?

The problem here and now (regardless of what the end result is) is that he is peeing a lot of people off...and those hard feelings are not going away in the near future.

Exactly, rts. The "Ugly American" just got a helluva lot uglier... and we represent the Lolly Pop Gang. Trumplethinskin pulls a tariff on Mexico, and punish the indigents sending money home, the Mexican Gov't can turn around and do the same thing to ex-pats who have holdings. I see nothing good coming from the braggadocio.

Same effect from the 7-country moslem ban. All it will accomplish is pi$$ off more good people and alienate them, causing more hate and discontent, and give fuel for more extremism. PROVEN: none of the serious terrorist hits in our own country came from any of the seven countries, other than one from Somalia. The 9/11 killers were from Saudi and Egypt. Our biggest terrorist other than 9/11 was a good ol' boy Christian that killed 186 people in Oklahoma a few years back.

First post from a longtime guest. Thank you veteran Nomads for years of useful information. This post is aimed at U.S. citizens in Baja with MX permanent resident status.

After a few weeks absent from monitoring Baja current events on the forums, and curious about reaction to the political events of the past week, I went online. I was surprised that I could find only one string on that topic; otherwise it was business as usual. I was motivated to finally join and give my 2 cents.

Throughout the Trump campaign, Mexicans and their country were insulted. I tried to assure my Mexican neighbors and friends that many Americans consider Mexico an important friend and ally. The harsh words from Trump didn’t match my perception after decades of living and traveling in Baja. In the past week, the rhetoric has escalated and the actions have started. I am reaching out again to assure these same people that a large number of Americans do not agree with the words and actions of the Trump administration toward Mexico.

I know many of us go to Baja to escape this stuff. All we want is a nice beach, good fishing, warm weather, a cold Pacifico, and friends to hang out with. Me too, but this is happening right now to our (other) home. As if most Mexicans don’t have enough problems, the U.S. government is seriously contemplating a steep tariff on imports from Mexico that will make their lives even worse.

These are the folks who help us maintain our nice, cheap lifestyle in Baja. We travel south in our big pickups or SUVs to our 2nd (or 3rd) homes that most Mexicans can only dream about. We play with our expensive toys, complain about a lot of things, and have a hard time carrying on a normal conversation in Spanish. Yet most Mexicans overlook all that and are habitually helpful and courteous.

On a selfish level, the Mexican/BCN government has the power to make our lives difficult in retaliation. Anybody want to get a new FM every year? How about a top-to-bottom search at the border and at every military checkpoint? Getting pulled over for going 10 km above the speed limit because of your U.S. license plate?

So reaching out to the Mexican people I know has become a priority. It seems like the right thing to do, and, who knows, maybe one of them will speak out when/if retaliation actions are considered.

Thanks for listening. Sorry for the long post.

Decades of Personal Experience................

.......... Has been that U.S. actions that don't set well with Mexico tend to make life (at worst) inconvenient for U.S. travelers at the Border Crossings and Checkpoints.

Assuming, of course, that the traveler is in legal compliance AND not attempting to avoid paying duties.

As one who (like many others) practiced the art of "avoidance" on almost every trip south, I viewed with trepidation thorough inspections. Especially, with the Army. Where paying a "convenience" fee wasn't an option.

Which might be a bigger worry now.

More than once over the years when harangued by a Mexican acquaintance over some stupid U.S. action, my reply was (in different wordings) "How much say do YOU have over what the Mexican Officials DO" ?

That said, the new President's attitude and promised plans have the potential to raise the "peesd" off level to a record high.

Taking the travel experience into the great unknown.

Buena Suerte.

Nice post without all the vitriol.

The party bases in all countries get riled up.

I talk to Mexicans every single day about this kind of stuff and the vast majority of them get that those of us living here are decent folks.

And, sin duda, they know a chitty politician when they see one.

Agreed. The Mexicans I know dont lump me in with this egotistical puppet. They recognize a con man in politics, quicker than us. Not really worried about Mexican backlash, at this point.

Anyway, it's time to head north and join the Resistance. Otherwise, we are Germans in '33-'35, allowing it to happen.

See you on the Mall.

When I look at the very sad situation of the politics of USA these days, I mourn the days when civility showed up on occasion.

The positions espoused by Trump and his ilk is simply a knuckledragging, racist, and mutant throwback in time....

What really is depressing is the notion that it is just where the USA is at these days....those who defend his ideology carry it close to their hearts....and are cloned sTrumpets...God help America

"Whining and snivelling" is quite different than being outraged and standing up for decent humane values....the "revolution" of his neo-n*zi movement isn't progress....it is devolution.

The world is watching.....and USA is not looking too smart to much of the world these days...but inspiring for other power-hungry dictators ....

I'm embarrassed to being an American citizen!

What Trump is doing with his Muslim ban, is giving the USA a black eye, and the stench is rubbing off on all Americans, because a large minority of people in US, voted for Trump.

Well, at least what's going to happen with Mexico, seems to be on the back burner for awhile.

I find it funny and interesting. Trump is doing exactly what he said he would do. He was elected president on it. I think we were all surprised at him getting elected whether we voted for him or not. I would rather have Trump that Hillary he is much more interesting. Mexico isn't going to do crap against the Americans because they don't want to lose the money flow be it from companies or individuals. Trump will look like a hero to his followers and he and Mexico will work out a plan that in the end doesn't change anything. Set back and enjoy the show.

You and I (and every other American) are going to end up paying for the show, and I'm guessing that's not going to make it near as enjoyable as you're saying it will. Mexico is never going to pay for that wall - you and I are. Oh, and sit back and relax while the US's relationships with the rest of the world go to shidt. ...HAHA. Really funny and interesting. :?:
