Diesel fuel availability
Hi folks,
It’s been awhile since we have travelled the length of the Baja. We plan to do so later this year in a diesel truck camper and I’m wondering about
fuel availability throughout Baja. Should we consider carrying extra fuel with us? Thanks for your comments.

Most all stations down here have diesel. Especially on the hiway. That being said but don't be too over confident start looking for fuel before you
need it really bad.
Off grid, 12-190 watt evergreen solar panels on solar trackers, 2-3648 stacked Outback inverters, 610ah LiFePo4 48v battery bank, FM 60 and MX60
Outback charge controllers, X-240 Outback transformer for 240v from inverters, 6500 watt Kubota diesel generator.

Diesel is everywhere.
The only long stretches w/o it are El Rosario to Jesus Maria (just above Guerrero Negro) on MX 1 and San Felipe to Jesus Maria.
In that stretch there is diesel at Bay of LA (40 miles off MX 1) and Gonzaga Bay (can be iffy).
In years of driving Baja only had one time when we ran super low. And that was due to hanging out in the stretch mentioned above for several days
off-roading and diesel being out in BoLA for 2 weeks. We found someone selling along the road in barrels near Chapala (where MX 1 meets MX 5)
Don't cross the border with loaded fuel jugs. Big no, no.

Range: haven’t done any road trips with this truck yet...just got it. Duramax in 3500HD Gmc Sierra access cab. Best guess looking at specs would be
about 600 mile range.

I always carry at least 5 gallons just in case... Even in the U.S. as I have been in places and traffic where there is no service and caught in
traffic for miles...

Still not a problem Doc.
The longest stretch without diesel fuel is <200> miles.
El Rosario to Villa Jesus Maria.

What year is your truck? If it does not require LSD, you can mix gas and motor oil to get diesel. Look online to get a recipe. I have a 2004 F250,
and bring extra gas in cans if I am going into the midriff area and fill up whenever I can. I would recommend a range of at least 200 miles, more is
preferred. Stations run out sometimes. Have fun!

My truck is a 2011 so it requires ultra low sulfur diesel. I’m assuming this is the type of fuel available in Baja, since it has been required in
diesels since 2009.

I bring my 2015 down all the time. We spend most the time in Baja Sur. I left it in Loreto for 6 months last year.
Search the board for ULSD.

I am not aware of Mexico requiring ulsd since 2009, where did you hear that?
fuel/emission requirements in usa are are not law in Mexico...
Here is news from dec 2019:
“By a unanimous vote, Mexico’s Energy Regulatory Commission (CRE) decided to postpone the closely watched rule in a meeting that lasted barely a
few minutes, with no public discussion and no reason given.
The postponement follows an earlier deferral late last year amid an ongoing legal battle over the matter.
Under the CRE’s resolution, Pemex can continue marketing ULSD only in Mexico City, Guadalajara, Monterrey - Mexico’s three largest cities - and on
the northern border with the United States through the end of 2024.
In the rest of Mexico, companies may choose which type of diesel they will offer.”

Should have clarified: the 2009 reference was for US/Canada.
Searched other threads on the advice of JZ...it appears finding ULSD in Baja is no more of a problem than finding fuel of any kind.
