Cambio de sexenio

I'm interested. And wow, that is quite the crowd! I like the fact that she's a scientist- that will certainly be a welcome change from Obrador, who said his talismans would protect him from Covid, and that it was a disease that only harmed rich people. (Meanwhile Mexico had one of the highest Covid death rates in the world)

And yes, it will be interesting to see what plays out in US/Mexico relations. Two female Presidents (hopefully) will definitely be different than a couple of roosters, neither of whom understand the other's culture, trading pot shots and plumping their feathers.

Wonder how she will tackle the biggest problem she is facing?
The cartels are in control of large parts of the country and have created a great deal of instability and insecurity. Looks like her science background will not get much use. The fiesta is over, time for her to stop talking and start doing! Will see what happens.

Yes we will.

Did you listen to her inauguration speech?

No, did I miss anything?

First-hand information. <shrug>

To be fair, I didnt watch and really dont care what she has to say. She has a lot of real work to do to turn the country back from the brink of Narco State. I will be watching to see if she tries to meet force with force or if there will be more of the "Hugs not Bullets" philosophy.

I really hope for the best but it is a very dangerous position at this point.

lencho- She is well aware of how much more dangerous the country has become in the last 10 years. Unfortunately, she is not optimistic about Sheinbaum being of the right mindset to fix it. Not a fan of the "Hugs not Bullets" strategy.

I remain hopeful but realistic.

Wow, I wish I had watched the ceremony. Being the optimist that I am, may she make a real difference!

I had a young educated Mexican couple (3 of their parents were lawyers for the federal govt.), in their early 20s, from Mexico City as Airbnb guests several years ago. We got to talking about Mexican politics and the corruption, and they said, yes, that it was an embarrassment on the international stage that Mexico is basically run by the cartels. They said, "But our generation is going to change all that."

Of course, it's quite common for most people to be idealistic when they are young, then often change their views when reality gets in the way and they realize it's not that easy to affect change.

But I found it interesting that they were so adamant that it needed to change and that they were committed to making it happen.
