Murder in bahia de los angeles

The missing Canadian was found murdered. He camped north of la gringa, body found, his camper/truck gone.

BOLA is a freaky place. Too many murders for such a small place.

Not much in the news, here is one article

And in Guadalupe Valley - reported 2/22/25

They locate another body in Guadalupe Valley #policecaensenada
Around 10:30 hours, municipal police received a report from C5 that, on the road Ensenada-Tecate, on the stream, at the height of the delegation Francisco Zarco, was found a lump with the characteristics of a human body, so they poured to the place.
Upon arriving at the scene, municipal elements visualized a person wrapped in plastic black tied with irrigation hoses.
You can only see some brown shoes and blue levis pants.
Also on the site were already found elements of the State Prosecutor General's Office who took over as first responders.
It should be mentioned that for the third day in a row that bodies have been located in the area of Francisco Zarco, so far they have not been identified.

Google translated that linked article very cleanly. No mention of a Canadian or the bodies identity:

"A corpse was found near La Gringa Beach
In the Bahia de Los Angeles district

A body, with parts devoured by animals, was found by tourists near a beach, near Bahia de los Angeles, southeast of the municipality of San Quintin.

Initial reports indicate that at 12:44 p.m. on Friday, January 24, American tourists reported the discovery of a body on a country road leading to La Gringa beach.

The corpse was near a group of coyotes that had begun to devour it.

After the discovery, Municipal Public Security officers went to the scene and confirmed that a lifeless body had been found.

They also found that part of it had been devoured by wild animals.

Following these events, they reported the incident to the emergency line and requested the intervention of the State Attorney General's Office for the corresponding investigations."

The above article gives a date of January 24, almost a month ago. I haven't yet found any reports online for a recently missing Canadian. Please provide links to news reports, if possible.

He specifically indicated there wasn't much info online about it.... not that the info he shared was from the article.

It appears to be info on Paul Leech from Manitoba, last sighted Jan 19th just north of La Gringa before his body was found a few days later.

The place has gone to dogs same as many other regions. Meaningless killing over an old truck. Probably druggies or a similar kind with broken brains and empty pockets, there is plenty of this in Mexico. There is a substantial population of migrants living in shacks between camp Archelon and Glorieta, coming and going. Most of them work "something" but there is only so much work in this dead-end town.

It's been about ten years since I camped out there, but my dog and I enjoyed the isolation at the end of the road several times.

I will still look for remote solo campsites on my Baja sojourns, but not near that bay anymore.

That is terrible. We've never camped there overnight, but have had many fires and cookouts there.

Surprising to me that there is no report of this in the 'news', especially after the murder of the three surfers last year near Ensenada.

I wonder how many other tourist murders there have been in Baja that we don't know about.

I’ve been camping at that spot on and off for the last two months. Overnight camping. I’ve heard sounds at night that worried me. I’ve also heard coyotes howling right next to my truck. I’ve met some wonderful people there as well but don’t recall seeing Paul. I’m just wondering. Would a pack of coyotes attack a single individual. The report doesn’t say cause of death.

I've been wondering the same. Nothing about what police did or didn't find. If they were even trying to find anything.

I have camped here as well and agree that the coyotes come in extremely close at night but never aggressive. Coyotes don't steal your truck after killing you. All signs point to the obvious even if we dont want to hear it again.

I think coyote attacks on adult humans are extremely rare. I've had one try to bite into a plastic 5-gallon water jug a couple of feet from my head where I was sleeping on the sand (I blissfully snored through it), but I bet if I'd stirred he would have taken off like a shot.

Other reports say it was homicide.

It looks like this man was murdered in order to steal his possessions.

Online reports indicate that coyotes do attack humans, but these attacks are not often fatal.

An online search for 'human death from coyote attack' brings up information for one fatal attack in the US and one in Canada.

This links to an interesting PDF on a study of coyote attacks.

To my observations coyotes can be bold and are not deterred much by presence of humans. If you sit or lay down on the ground in the dark, he will keep coming and will stop only if you stand up. They do this even when there is no food and water around you. Doesn't have to be a pack, one coyote can be very persistent. They can bite you when provoked. In extreme circumstances like sudden winter when all their usual prey has disappeared they can attack and kill a large animal or a human. There was only one documented case in North America when they killed a grown up person. But, no small prey in Baja, all mice and ground squirrels disappeared? In Baja these rodents are eternal, humans will disappear before they will.

Just to note, the victim in the US was a three year old girl, small enough for one coyote to grab and drag away. In Canada a 19-year old girl was attacked and killed by two coyotes. Very rarely a coyote attacks a prey much larger than itself.

bottom line - any place north of Guerrero Negro could be your last camp.
The Pacific side more so than the Sea of Cortes side.
Avoid Bahia de los Angeles at all cost!
Most common victim - single guy with a nice camper and no dog
