The PGJE agent was traveling home without a guard to support him, despite the fact that the night before he had already been threatened with
narco-banners, in which he, another member of the Attorney General's Office named Humberto Yee, a Municipal Police commander named Miramontes, and all
the commanders of the Municipal, State Police and the Attorney General's Office were mentioned.
The banners were hung on the night of Monday, April 21, at Montoya High School in Santa Rosalía and another at the San José del Cabo International
Airport, in the municipality of Los Cabos.
Also in this latter town, a body was found dead on Tuesday at noon on the dirt road leading to the San Lázaro dam in San José del Cabo. The body
showed signs of violence and was decapitated. He was wearing a sweatshirt and blue pants.
Similarly, at 2 p.m. on Tuesday, on Juan Carlón Street in the Fundo Legal neighborhood of Guerrero Negro (the northernmost municipality in the
state), a maroon KIA pickup truck was intercepted by gunmen. A soldier named Roberto "N," a second lieutenant assigned to the 40th Military Zone of
the Ministry of National Defense (SEDENA), was traveling in the vehicle, accompanied by a civilian welder.
The attackers fired their high-caliber weapons at the truck, killing the soldier inside. The civilian was taken to a hospital for treatment, where he
died minutes later from gunshot wounds.

Boy, I'm glad I got to see and enjoy Baja when I did. It was a beautiful country with beautiful people. Poor by our standards but happy-- always
smiling and gracious. What a shame.

Current conflicts in key cartel territories involve several players warring against El Chapo’s Sinaloa cartel, which controls much of the illicit
operations in Baja/BCS. The unrest is persistent and has escalated again over the past year.
The phrase “short legged ones” may refer to the “Chapitos” who are the sons of El Chapo and who took over his operations after his arrest
years ago. Chapparo/a is nickname for a short fat person, shorty, half-pint, etc. and Joaquín Loera Guzmán is approximately 5 feet 6 inches tall.
His relatively short stature is actually how he got the nickname “El Chapo,” which means “Shorty” in Mexican slang.
Arrests of organized crime members destabilize operational control though well-maintained structures of intimidation, corruption and violence. I
observed an increased cartel-like prescence in the East Cape area this winter. Local Mexican news/social media content for B.C.S. supported my
thoughts and included reports of missing young persons, weapons seizures, discovery of clandestine graves near SJC and La Paz, extortion, major
off-shore drug busts etc.
A Mexican friend said the cartel was not looking to prey on tourists, but they are aware of the presence of each other and the business activity going
on. While violence has waxed and waned in B.C.S. over the years, visitors are relatively seldom targeted by general operations. The extreme violence
due to turf wars was brought under control last time, but citizens must endure cartel “normal” operations alongside overdevelopment, inflation,
poverty and shortages of utilities and basic necessities while trying to make a living.
Baja and B.C.S. is changing rapidly, but are still full of very good people and incredible things to see and experience. The drive home in March was
safe with usual precautions and expected good memories.

In past day, 3 busses were fire-bombed in Cabo… from BCS Noticias:
Los Cabos, Baja California Sur (BCS). In the last 24 hours, the municipality of Los Cabos has been the scene of three attacks against public
transportation services. The boards of directors of the various transportation companies in the region have decided to temporarily suspend public
transportation services in San José del Cabo until further notice , prioritizing the safety of passengers and drivers.
