Scorpion Bay 2027 Need a bit of advice

I live in Oklahoma and a bucket list item for me has been Scorpion Bay. I lived in Mex from 78 - 82 as a kid crossing the border everyday to go to school. Spent a lot of time as a teenager down it Baja. It calls me back!

I own a Raptor and and my Brother has a capable F-350. We are considering a 10 day trip into Baja in Sept or Oct 2027. My main question is about accommodations. With Starlink and access to the Internet is it possible to wing it with finding a place to stay? I have found some resources for well travelled and well documented Off Highway routes (Baja Backbone Map, etc). We want to dive, fish and surf and get into relatively remote Baja. We wont have an itinerary. Can I just show up in LA Bay or elsewhere and find a place to crash for the night with just a days notice, possibly less?

When are big races? I want to avoid them, Im guessing the accommodations get gobbled up. Is it even realistic to "Wing It" and still expect to find a bed to sleep on every night?

Yes, you should be able to wing it on accommodations unless there's a Mexican holiday or event the day you are staying somewhere.

That's the fun of it........just see where you end up and look for a room....if not you can sleep in the trucks in an emergency.

If there's a big swell at Scorp Bay then the local hotel may be booked but it's been 8 years since I've been there so not sure about accommodations. I will be there in July though.....

No big races during that time period.

Yes to Ateo's reply...
If you want to fish and surf then I suggest bringing sleeping bags and cots, too. There is the Baja 400 in September out of Ensenada in the north. It won't be an issue going to Scorpion Bay or the Seven Sisters, etc. The fastest way to central or southern Baja is to use Highway 5 via San Felipe. Top your fuel tank at every open station (San Felipe, Gonzaga Bay, etc.).

Ten days isn't enough!

If ten days is all you have, at least it is a great time of the year to explore Central Baja. That is my favorite part of the peninsula coast to coast, and if you are lucky, you can watch the desert bloom.

There are several interesting routes into San Juanico, but if your Raptor is on a typical trailer I suggest you stick to the long way around on pavement.

I hope you have time to check out Mulege and Loreto. A side trip into Bahia Asuncion is also a good option, and a day's drive closer to the border.

If you are not living on the edge, you are taking up too much space!

You can probably wing it. If it is a weekend or holiday and rooms might be in short supply, I call ahead a day or two before to book a room.
Sept is hurricane season, so watch weather reports and plan accordingly. Also, sometimes it takes a while for roads to be passable after hurricanes.

Woke!

I am guessing he means a Ford F-150 Raptor (full-size 4x4 truck)... :light:

I didn't think of that, I thought he was taking a quad UTV down to play with!

In that case....screw the paved road, they will have plenty of them on the way south!

By the way, I was at Scorpion Bay in Jan of 2025. They seem to have done better Post Covid than some of the other places along the way as far as restaurants and lodging.

Thanks Everyone for the Quick Replies. The Raptor on the Trailer had me scratching my head. I think it was Yamaha that made Raptor Quad! Definitely wont have my Raptor on trailer. If it is, things have gone very wrong!
