That area burned about nine or ten years ago. I drove through there the next year and was amazed how many black palm trunks had sprouted new green
tops!
I hope the loss to locals is not severe.
If you are not living on the edge, you are taking up too much space!
"Could do better if he tried!" Report card comments from most of my grade school teachers. Sadly, still true!

Comondú, Baja California Sur (BCS).
The fire that broke out in the palm groves of San José de Comondú—causing significant damage to various homes, businesses, and natural areas—was
allegedly caused by the improper burning of palm grove waste, according to information provided by Comondú Mayor Roberto Pantoja Castro. The blaze
escalated rapidly within minutes due to the highly combustible nature of the local vegetation; preliminary reports indicate that between 30 and 40
homes were affected, with at least 15 completely consumed by the fire.
In an interview, the mayor stated that there are accounts pointing to a human cause behind the fire. He declared, "It was caused by the improper
burning of palm grove waste carried out by people," noting that community members and witnesses identified burning activities taking place hours
before the fire began.
According to municipal authorities, the flames spread quickly due to the accumulation of palm debris and the terrain's characteristics. Although
emergency teams arrived at the scene with state and regional support, the fire was already out of control by the time the first reinforcements
arrived. Nevertheless, the timely evacuation of the population prevented a greater tragedy.
Preliminary estimates indicate that between 30 and 40 households were affected, while at least 15 homes were completely destroyed by the fire. Losses
of livestock, vehicles, and commercial establishments were also reported, alongside damage to structures of historical value to the community—an
area considered one of Baja California Sur's most iconic oases.
The municipal government reported that efforts are ongoing to fully extinguish hotspots and prevent the fire from reigniting. Concurrently, Civil
Protection personnel are conducting a damage assessment to determine the full impact of the incident. Authorities highlighted that there were no
fatalities or serious injuries.
Additionally, the municipality has opened a collection center to receive food, bottled water, clothing, and other supplies for the affected families.
Pantoja Castro indicated that residents and local authorities are expected to file formal complaints with the Public Prosecutor's Office in order to
determine liability and clarify the origin of the fire.

That's a catastrophe - especially all the homes and "structures of historical value to the community—an area considered one of Baja California Sur's
most iconic oases." Another decade to recover.
If anyone has any ideas for reliable conduit or trustworthy someone to accept $$ for supplies, I'd donate (not much, but if it got going and the word
spread (TB), maybe could collect enough to help out. ??

some good news for the local residents;
BCS Noticias
11 July, 2026
Comondú, Baja California Sur (BCS)
The construction of 10 homes for families affected by fires in San José de Comondú was announced as part of a comprehensive strategy to support
those who completely lost their property during the emergency in this community within the municipality of Comondú. This measure is part of a series
of actions aimed at supporting the recovery of those affected and accelerating the restoration of living conditions in the area.
During a visit to the communities of San José de Comondú and San Miguel de Comondú, Governor Víctor Manuel Castro Cosío spoke with affected
residents to learn firsthand about the needs arising from the disaster. At that meeting, he reiterated that support for the families would continue
through coordinated efforts among authorities at various levels of government.
According to the announcement, the 10 new houses will feature two bedrooms, a living room, a dining area, and a bathroom. Additionally, families whose
homes sustained partial damage will receive support through the construction of 13 rooms with bathrooms, as well as the provision of materials for
home rehabilitation work.
The state governor highlighted the importance of maintaining solidarity during the recovery process, stating: "Because hardships unite us, and by
joining forces, we will move forward together." He made this statement while reaffirming that the well-being of the affected families is a priority
for the state administration.
As part of additional measures, a 15-day Temporary Employment Program will be launched. Fifty people—an equal mix of men and women—will
participate in this initiative, carrying out cleanup activities in corrals, access paths, orchards, and community spaces. The initiative aims to
contribute to the recovery of the localities and generate income for the participants.
Finally, it was announced that state agencies would maintain a permanent presence in the region to follow up on support efforts. Recognition was also
given to the emergency teams, institutions, and citizens who collaborated in responding to the fire, with the goal of ensuring a faster and more
robust recovery for the affected communities.

It's nothing official -- just "a guy I know".. But I have a friend in San Juanico who is in touch with quite a few people there helping with supplies
and assistance.. I've sent him some $$ to send over to the affected community.. Message me if you're interested, and I can get you his information.
