Checkpoint

Any news about the supposed new checkpoint near Santa Rosalía? Anyone pass there recently? Is it military or customs?

I wonder what customs would be doing that far from the port. Military, INM, federal police - those are more likely.

I’m not sure about this whole thing, but some of the other volunteers and the administrator of our La Paz Limb Restoration Project are all up in arms about this.

Up in arms?

Have you heard if this new checkpoint is different than the other ones on the way to La Paz?

If you are not living on the edge, you are taking up too much space!

"Could do better if he tried!" Report card comments from most of my grade school teachers. Sadly, still true!

Both Bea (the clinic administrator) and Miguel (who sometimes handles transport of parts/supplies/materials) are pretty sure that this stop is not military, but rather has to do with customs. Therefore Miguel no longer wants to transport stuff to La Paz and risk his business (as he bypasses Aduana at the border and
doesn’t have official paperwork). Any news from fellow travelers?

I think their uniforms will indicate what kind of authority they have.

Just an idea but it may be prudent to remove names in this instance.

The clinic administrator said that the checkpoint is “Federal” whatever that means. Could it be federal as in customs or as in “the federales” like in police or military troops?

Mexico no longer has a civilian federal police force, the infamous "federales". It has been militarized; the National Guard has replaced it. So, if it's not the normal army checkpoint, it is either the National Guard, Customs, or Immigration, or some combination. They all have different uniforms that indicate their affiliation.

It could be State Police.

I’ve been stopped at Camalu and La Paz by Immigration. No uniform. He wore a suit. The military standing by wore uniform.

I was asked for my “papers”.

Me, too; I handed them over, and things went downhill quickly.
