Current problem in Mexicali

This news article popped up on my MSN feed this morning. Does anyone have more information?

https://www.msn.com/en-us/news/other/us-citizens-told-seek-s...

Mexicali is where I usually cross the border.

The intro to the above linked video states:

"Mexicali Valley is high-risk due to a crime surge, including over a dozen homicides this month & 500+ assassinations in the last 4 years."

State Department Travel Advisory Levels for Mexico
https://travel.state.gov/en/international-travel/travel-advi...

In past years, I have traveled through most of these States, via public transportation, without any serious problems. However, I was traveling very light, carrying just a day pack. Other than the cash I had, the total value of all my gear was under $100US. I wasn't much of a target for robbery.

I cancelled my Baja hiking plans because I don't fancy being in remote areas where cartels are reported to be operating, carrying $2,000US worth of trekking gear.

Thanks for the feed! I noticed that one of the news talkers was reporting from Algodones.

False alarm? Trumpish anti-mexico security theatre? From zeta…

Following the issuance of a security alert in Mexicali by the United States government, the National Security Cabinet reported that no evidence has been found to confirm a risk in the state capital; however, security operations continue by all three levels of government.

Claudia Sheinbaum clarified that the alert issued by the U.S. in Mexicali was due to the possible presence of a criminal group, and that preventive surveillance is being maintained.

Woke!

"alert issued by the U.S. in Mexicali was due to the possible presence of a criminal group". no chit cherlock.

It's suggested that all travelers cross at TJ instead. Take the back streets through town around midnight...just to be safe.

Sounds like business as usual? I don't spend time near Mexicali, and since I just pass through, I prefer that short drive over passing through Southern CA and Tijuana/Ensenada.

I usually head south from Northern CA by crossing over to Nevada and explore some of that route on my way to Baja.
