Gas prices raised to pay for cleaner fuel

Mexico raised the retail price of premium gasoline and diesel Thursday to cover the cost of producing cleaner burning the Finance Secretariat said.
The introduction of ultra-low sulfur premium gasoline will cost state oil monopoly Petróleos Mexicanos, or Pemex, an additional 2.1 billion pesos
(US$195 million) a year, and the ultra-low sulphur diesel fuel will cost an additional 2.8 billion pesos (US$258 million) a year.

Pemex began distributing the new clean fuels last month, and said it plans to invest US$3 billion over three years as it extends the sales to the
entire country.

Service stations will charge an extra 29 centavos (3 U.S. cents) a liter plus tax for premium gasoline, or 8.25 pesos a liter (US$2.90 a gallon), and
16 centavos (1 U.S. cent) a liter more for diesel, or 5.68 pesos a liter (US$2 a gallon).

At his daily news conference, presidential spokesman Rubén Aguilar said the increases won´t be a hardship on Mexico´s poor because they don´t
generally buy premium gasoline.

"This is a tax on the highest sectors of the population that consume this gasoline," Aguilar said. "And in any case it´s a marginal cost to improve
the environment, which does benefit the whole of society."

Last month Diesel was only $1.83.9/gallon according to Antonio.
One cent more would be $1.84.9/gallon ?
I just paid $2.75 today in Washington !

Even at $2/gal, I save $27 per tank.

On my way out of Baja in June, I filled my boat with about 110 gallons of diesel. At the time diesel was about 3.30 gallon in the state and about 1.80
gallon in Mexico.

I saved about 165.00 at the time. That spread has now been cut in half.

In San Felipe, as stated, only the premium went up with the added tax.

From 7.58 por litro to 7.90 (32 centavos).
