The Whale at San Juanico

This boat has been on the beach at San Juanico for some time, apparently the wreck of someone's plan for a tourist cruiser.

Surprisingly enough, it hasn't been stripped of its motor, toilet, wood slat benches or plywood flooring.

Anyone know the story on this?

Here, from the web page I made:

Photo from Reefrocket of the Mexican Tourism Department's $30,000 'flounder'. Sailed once and beached by the skipper. It was operated from the rear and had no forward visibility. Glass used was not safetyglass. Doors opened outward, preventing escape if capsized. Motor fumes vented into cabin, not out exhaust pipe. Some think it would make a great fish taco restaurant...on land! Photo taken Jan, 2002. Web site by www.VivaBaja.com

But except for all that it was okay?

Thanks for the info, DK. Do you also know why it hasn't been stripped of its useful parts? That's really not normal.

I'd still live in it. I can see it now.... just like Crazy Annie's boat in Bahia, or what some people call the Gilligan's Island boat, plant it at the highest tide on our lot and we'll be set. How much would it cost to move it to Bahia?

mirando las ballenas

A few San Juanicans got together and complained to the government that they weren't getting their fair share of the tourist dollar. There were plenty of surfing tourists visiting in the summer but come the cold, windy, flat seas of winter and the place was a ghostown. Winter fishing was nothing special and even gringos would soon figure out that the cold windy conditions could be miserable in a panga. The only thing happening in the winter that could possibly be an attraction where the whales.

Unfortunately the whales usually passed by this stretch of coast way off shore, so they were going to need a boat to get their new touristas out there. This whale watching boat was built (in Mazatlan I believe) and trucked to S.J.

While the boat was under construction, a man from one of the original founding families in town, Susano, was sent off the La Paz for a month to attend tourist school and the plan was for him to be the head of this new enterprise.

The boat arrived and was moored inside the bay. After the design snafu's were discovered, it sat for several months in the water and became quite a bird magnet. There was so much poop on one side after a while, the ballena leaned with the side windows almost in the water. It eventually became a navigational hazard and was towed to shore.

It might look like you could make a unique home out of it Paulina, by I kayaked by there a few times and the smell of this particular ballena was pretty overwhelming.:barf:

Thanks, Ola. We've been inside the thing on four different trips and it has always looked livable--didn't detect any bad smells.

Haunted, of course! I should have thought of that, Woody.

The future of Shell Island is here! Happy Hours and chips served from this whale on the shores of Shell Island!

Thanks for info David. Is it still there?

From my patio, I am looking at the whale right now. It is one of San Juanico's finest attractions. People come from all over the world to see it. With all the talk of hurting for tourists, what will become of this pueblo's tourist trade should the whale move to Shell Island?

Just kidding about the last part. But I am looking at the whale.
