camping & fishing in puertecitos & gonzaga - 5.19 - 5.27

hello all,

we are taking a trip into Baja Norte through San Felipe from 5/19 - 5/27. i'd like to spend some time in Puertecitos San Luis Gonzaga with possibly a couple days on the pacific side as we return north.

i'll be bringing some shore fishing gear as well as snorkeling & spear fishing gear. hoping to have some fun in the sun with my fiancee before we get married in June.

is anyone willing to share some good camping/fishing spots in the area that would be welcoming? i've picked the board apart finding suggestions for fishing... i've got The Baja Catch on order.

anyone have some less overrun places to stay and experience the beach life? is everything going to be ridiculous for the memorial day holiday?

one more week till the Landcruiser gets packed and we're on our way. psyched.

thanks in advance for any insight or advice.

Mood: Anxious to get south

Memorial Day is not as nuts as you think it might be, it's much quieter on the Sea of Cortez side especially when it's hot than the Pacific Side. We're near San Felipe, town might get a little busy, but it's just friendly folks south of town and beyond.

Water temp is 74 for San Felipe right now, and the air temp today was 92 degrees. The water may be cooler further south like at Gonzaga, but just by a degree or two. The weather is warm, bring a big cooler for a lot of ice.

From what I understand technically spear fishing equipment is illegal in Baja by us Gringos, but there is no enforcement in that area. No licsense required to fish from shore.

Looks like your coming back on a Sunday, cross either super early or super late at any crossing, they're all long waits these days.

Erindira might be a good spot for your Pacific side stop, Punta Cabras area to be exact, nice beaches, cold water.

There are some Gonzaga guys here that will jump in and tell you more about that area, they're the experts on accomidations.

Congradulations on your upcoming wedding!

Haven't had a bad trip yet....

thanks for the camping tips! looking into them now.

very glad to hear it won't be a circus down there around the holiday. we're both looking for some serious leisure time... and that water/air temp sounds just perfect for swilling pacificos.

i've done research on spearfishing and it is allowed if you have a fishing license and use only [rubber] banded guns - no air or compression powered. odd that you don't need a license to fish from shore though.

thanks again and look forward to any tips from other area locals!

Campo Beluga, from the reports on this board, sounds good to me.

http://www.puertosantotomas.com/ on the way home or you could stop by Pirates Cove in Camalu and see if the swimming pool is open.

Just south of Campo La Costilla there was some nice camping spots. We caught fish from shore and I had something big bite off a popper that I was casting from shore. It was a few years back but hey check it out. Another place was about five miles further south. We had our own beach buthey...don't tell anybody

South of La Costilla -Near Black Mountain

Good time to go down there. Can be hot but the water is warming and great for swiming.
Ok shore fishing there, but not real protected from the winds. If you go just past Black Mountain there are some protected spots and nice camping. Remember to just ignore the airplanes landing on that long stretch of straight road near there. I don't think the pilots or their staff like to be bothered.
