Something else to add to the Border mix

> MEXICO CITY (AP) — Mexico called on the United States to alter a plan to expand border
> fences designed to stem illegal immigration, saying the barriers would threaten migratory
> species accustomed to roaming freely across the frontier.
> Ways of minimizing environmental damage from the fences could include the creation of
> cross-border bridge areas so that ecosystems remain connected and "green corridors" of
> wilderness without roads that would be less attractive to smugglers, according to a report
> released Monday and prepared for the Mexican government by experts and activists from
> both nations.
>
> The report also suggested "live" fences of cactuses, removable fencing, and more
> permeable barriers to allow water, insects and pollen to cross the border. Ecologists say
> among the species affected would be Mexican jaguars and black bears, and the
> endangered, antelope-like Sonora Pronghorn.
>
> On Monday, Mexico's Environment Department said the proposed fences would seriously
> hurt species that cross the 1,952-mile border and that the United States needs to alter or
> mitigate the barriers where necessary.
>
> "The eventual construction of this barrier would place at risk the various ecosystems that
> we share," said Environment Secretary Juan Rafael Elvira, noting that the border is not just
> desert, but includes mountains, rivers and wetlands.
>
> Mexico also wants Washington to expand its environmental impact study on the fences
> and will file a complaint with the United Nations' International Court of Justice in the
> Hague, Netherlands if necessary.
>
> The proposed fencing includes at least 370 miles of vehicle barriers and metal walls
> supplemented by "virtual" barriers of sensors, mobile towers packed with sophisticated
> cameras, strong lights, radars and sensors and other technology.
>
> The environmental report said the fences could isolate border animals into smaller
> population groups, affecting their genetic diversity. The strong lights and radar could
> interfere with nocturnal species, and the construction and traffic along the walls could
> affect a wider strip of border land than just the fences themselves, activists say.
>
> Environmentalists say construction of the fencing could wipe out endangered species like
> the Sonoran Pronghorn — of which only about 100 still exist — in the coming years.
>
> Exequiel Ezcurra, director of research at the San Diego Natural History Museum, said the
> pronghorns are used to moving across the border in search of scarce grassland.
>
> The pronghorn "is without doubt the species in the most desperate situation, the number
> one victim of all the tension and movement on the border," Ezcurra said.
>

A very reasonable assesment of the situation from an ecological viewpoint, which I happen to share. - CaboRon

During the early '80s I lived in Santa Fe, NM. There was an alternative newspaper there with free and wide distribution in paper racks all around the area.

On the cover of one issue was a person on a horse, leaning sideways, Polo style, and appearing to grab a Cholla. The headline read, "Cholla grabbing contest" Of course it was a spoof, but it was a good piece of satire, with a set of rules, deadlines, etc. Well, the response was considerable. Many people took it seriously and ended up in the ER with a rather painful situation.

Do you think Homeland Security and The Border Patrol could institute a program of this sort along the border? Better yet, maybe the Minutemen could plant, develop the contest and rules, and officiate. That would save all of us taxpayers a lot of money. MrBillM's idea is a start. :bounce::O

Liberal Wisdom

That Sagacious Seer of Sensibility, the REV Al (Tawana) Sharpton was asked tonight if he supported securing the border and he replied that he was in favor of Border Security as long as it was not discriminatory. We should build the same border structures on the Canadian border as we do on the Mexican Border to prove that we are as worried about the Whites crossing the border illegally as we are the Mexicans and Haitians.

When challenged by O'Reilly "There have been 12 million crossing the southern border and about 4 guys trying to cross from Canada, he said "Well, what's important Bill, the numbers or the LAW" ?

The NUMBERS, marooon.

BTW, for those foaming rabid haters of Fox News, O'Reilly mentioned a stat that has to break your hearts. The 4 a.m. rerun of "The O'Reilly Factor" draws more viewers than ANY other Cable News program at any hour of the day or night.

Eat Your Hearts OUT !

As you undoubtedly know, but wish somehow it wasn't true, ?The O'Reilly Factor? is the highest rated news program on Cable (and Satellite) TV. His audience is higher than ALL of his competitors COMBINED.

Personally, he isn't my favorite, but he is good. A little too Liberal on many things, though. I prefer John Gibson , Neil Cavuto and Brit Hume, in that order.

REALLY !

Doh! - Something similar could be said about the Simpsons.

I think it's great that the red speckled gnat catcher could stop The Wall.

hahahaha - these are amusing times.

Bart or Bill ?

I'll have to allow someone else more qualified to assess the "Simpsons". Having never watched the show and never intending to, I'll leave the Cartoon shows to the Liberals who are more qualified to relate on that level.

I remember people from my Beach days who watched cartoons while they smoked the Marijuana. Perhaps that's still the case with today's Aged Hippies.

Did O'Rilley mention the statistics on the I.Q. of those watching the Factor. They are the lowest of all the shows. The viewers of Faux News also rate the lowest intelligence of all other news shows and I guess that's why they don't realize they are not watching a news show.

...and the Star and National Enquiror outpace the Economist and The New Yorker by 132 to 1!

The lower the bar, the higher the numbers.
